2010 INSP conference

INSP's 15th annual conference took place in Melbourne, Australia from the 17th - 20th May, hosted by The Big Issue Australia. Read more. The conference; 'Global Collaboration, Real Solutions', marked the start of exciting network-wide collaborations, through several new projects, including an advertising project and an international campaign to be launched in October. Lord Provost Reception

Hus Forbi 212 TSINSP's Patron, the Lord Provost of Glasgow Bob Winter, hosted a second networking reception for INSP in Glasgow's City Chambers on Wednesday 5th May. Around 70 guests attended, including key members of Scotland's business, media, charity and government communities. Read more. Following the reception, INSP's Executive Director has met with many of the guests directly and the INSP has since received a financial donation from a well known Scottish company as well as gifts in kind from The City Inn Hotel (Glasgow), The Crowne Plaza Hotel (Glasgow) and journalism training opportunities from The Herald and Times group.  
New staff at INSP

Hus Forbi 212 TSINSP has recently hired Sven Mangels (pictured) as the new Regional Training and Development Manager (Africa) who will officially start with INSP next week in Cape Town.  Sven, MBA, is a social entrepreneur from Hamburg, Germany who set up his own social enterprise and also has a history with the street paper movement having served as an INSP intern in 2005. Sven will be employed by INSP, with support from the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), to provide support and build the capacity of the six existing street papers in Africa and look to launch a new street paper in the region. He will join the African street-paper network's regional co-ordinator Samba Yonga (The Big Issue Zambia) and representatives from the five other papers in South Africa in mid-July for the network's first regional meeting.
INSP journalism training in Africa

Hus Forbi 212  TSAs part of the UNDEF-funded project in Africa, special media and journalism trainings are currently taking place at all of the six street papers, provided by regional offices and trainers of Inter Press Service and Reuters. Thanks to both organisations for their input, experience and support.
Latin America

Hus Forbi 212 TSINSP is currently carrying out a needs assessment in Latin America, to establish how INSP can support individual street papers and establish a regional network. INSP's Executive Director, also met with Brazilian street paper representatives during the INSP conference about the next steps for this project. INSP also met with potential new street paper founders in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, as well as the Director of regional NGO network, 'ONGnet' to help build connections in the region.
