Special Sadhana on SSS's Birthday
On the morning of Sunday, August 26 morning sadhana at the ashram is very, very special.  First, for 11 minutes, we chant "Guru Guru Wahe Guru, Guru Ram Das Guru," and for those 11 minutes we are totally united, as one voice, with our dharmic community all over the world.  All around the globe we syncronize it, so that we are all chanting at the same time.  In Espanola we start at 4 am, in Europe at 8 am, in India at 4:30 pm. What a gift to our planet to have this united prayer going out all around the world!

After chanting to Guru Ram Das, we begin our two and a half hours of "Long Ek Ong Kars."

Book Review

By Shanti Kaur

Sikh Histroy book cover pictureI love books. I enjoy the feel of paper, the way that words dance across paper, and the slightly musty smell of bookshelf dust. Don't misunderstand me - I appreciate and utilize my Kindle everyday. But the books in my library hold a different energy and presence that e-books can never have. That difference is that when e-books are not being read - they don't exist. But the books on my bookshelf always are there and they constantly surround me with their wisdom. Read entire article and book review

Food Storage Plan

by Ravi Har Singh

Many people have asked me what I recommend as a starting point for a food storage plan.  I am happy to share the plan I came up with for our family and the thinking that went behind it.  Planning food storage has to be a personal process.  If your family has to live for an extended period of time on stored food, morale is not going to be good if the only food you have is what no one wants to eat.  A diet of Brussels sprouts and lima beans would probably push me over the edge of sanity after just a few days!

OK, so how do we start?  Read Entire Article

Pool Party in honor of Guru Har Krishan

akal dhyan on horseOn behalf of the Children and Parents of the Espanola Sangat:

Special thanks to Guru Simran Kaur Khalsa for hosting the Birthday Celebration in honor of the child guru, Guru Har Krishan. The children brought gifts for Guru Har Krishan such as drawings and flowers and were treated to horse rides, swimming in the pool and delicious cake.  Guru Simran teaches the children about the life of Guru Har Krishan and the other gurus during the schoolyear children's program.

She is a much appreciated part of our children's lives and we are so grateful for the time she spends encouraging seva with the Food for Kids program and for bringing in special sangat member guests to teach yoga and gatka. Thank you Guru Simran!

MEET MY FRIENDS, SUNNAI AND MANNAI

A Poem by Jiwan Joti Kaur

There was once a Sikh Saint, named Guru Nanak,
The first Guru of the Aquarian Age.
He walked and sang a universal song,
Timeless teachings, true for all - a real-life Sage.

Nanak means "no no," and for years I misunderstood.
That to every request I had to only say "yes",
To serve, teach, counsel, heal and uplift
Until I was in one big physical mess.

Yogi Bhajan - A Warrior's Vigilance

 by Hari Jiwan Singh

"Sir, at what point does a Sikh take up arms? When does tolerance end and the battle begin?" Our Master's answer shocked me.

Khalsa Woman's Camp was always in the hottest part of the year. New Mexico in July and August can be brutal. Every summer our ladies would tent under the blue skies of New Mexico and attend camp. There were classes, seva, lectures, marching... yes, that's right, woman's marching practice.

The Uranus-Pluto Squares of 2012-2015

It's fascinating to watch how cultures around the globe and a lot of us as individuals are experiencing and reflecting the vibrations of the Uranus-Pluto squares. The last major aspects between Uranus and Pluto were the series of conjunctions in the 1960s, a decade that saw cultural revolution for women's rights, civil rights, and gay rights, and that catalyzed clear and sweeping changes in many cultures around the globe.

Quote from Yogi Bhajan about doing two and a half hours of long Ek Ong Kars:

"All mantras are good, and awaken the Divine.  But this mantra is effective, and is the mantra for this time.  So, my lovely students, at the will of the Master, I teach you the greatest Divine Key.  It has eight levers, and can open the lock of the time, which is also of the vibration of eight.  Therefore, when this mantra is sung with the Neck Lock, at the point where praana and apaana meet sushmuna, this vibration opens the lock, and thus one becomes one with the Divine."
