Unity Medicine offers the Santa Fe community a unique style of integrative health care combining modern Western medical approaches with the time-tested healing knowledge of Ayurveda and Yoga. We partner with our patients to guide them in their path to health, offering Western methods when appropriate, but recognizing that traditional healing systems are important because they target the underlying causes of disease.
Dr. Grasser is the founder and medical director of Unity Medicine, and is a primary care physician practicing Integrative Medicine. He offers both Family Practice and Ayurveda Appointments. Heather Vaughan, C Ay, is an Ayurveda Practitioner offering Health Consultations, Treatments and Yoga Therapy.

Spring Cleanse 'Diet number One': Fruits, Nuts and Vegetables by Dr. Kirpal Singh
Yogi Bhajan recommended a diet of only fruits, nuts and vegetables to beginning yoga students. He encouraged them to take the steps to break away from a meat based diet and embrace a healthy lifestyle. My first yoga teacher introduced it at a time when my muscles were tight and my life was full of tension. I was out of touch with my body and my natural rhythms. He promised that it would complement the cleansing process initiated by the yoga. A group of us from the class committed ourselves to thirty days. It changed my life. I can't say that I lost weight, at age eighteen I was a skinny guy anyway, but many of the other students did lose weight, lots of it. For me, the most important result of this diet was that it opened my eyes to the joy of eating lightly and consciously. Read Entire Article |

Yogi Bhajan, Baisakhi Celebration by Hari Jiwan Singh
Note: this article was written by HJS in April of last year.
I spent this past weekend (April, 2011), in LA at our annual Baisakhi Day Celebration. Fifteen thousand Sikhs visit the Convention Center every year. This day is the only time when all of the Gurdwaras in Southern California join together to serve as one Gurdwara. The Master envisioned all Sikhs, turbaned or not, East or West, worshipping under one roof, without judgment of any kind, as one Sangat. Read entire article |

Earth Day 2011 - Ashram Community Garden |
ASHRAM COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT
The main focus of the Ashram Community Garden Group this year is to GROW THE SOIL, which means to improve its quality, and its ability to produce nutritious food, on an on-going basis. This is an urgent priority, because the ashram lands are currently depleted of any viable microbiology (bacteria and fungi). Looking ahead, the goal is to create a situation where, 5 years from now, the ashram will be in a position to sustain itself by growing enough food to feed not only our sangat, but also people in the surrounding area that may need our support. This is critically important to the ashram, for our future!

Food for Health
Artichokes, a delight of Spring! - based on an article from Mother Earth News
How to Cook an Artichoke
Ingredients: An artichoke, a lemon, and melted butter
Tear off outer tough or brown looking leaves (mostly the little ones on the stem), cut off most of the stem and the top third of the artichoke(I use a serated knife for this). Use a scissors to snip off the sharp leaf tips. Rub and squeeze 1/2 a lemon all over the artichoke to keep it looking fresh ands bright. Drop the artichoke into boiling water or set it upside down in a steamer, over boiling water. Cook till a knife slides easily into the stem end (about 45 minutes), or cook for 10 minutes in a pressure cooker.
How to Eat an Artichoke
Squeeze 1/2 a lemon into a couple tablespoons of butter. Set the artichoke upright on your plate and begin to pull off one leaf at a time. Dip the meaty end of the leaf into the lemon butter and slowly scrape off the meat with your teeth. Pile used leaves to the side. When you see the purple-tipped leaves and furry "choke" towards the center, remove it by scraping it out with the side of a fork, or scoop out with a spoon. Slice through the heart with your fork, breaking it into chunks. Dip each chunk in the lemon butter and savor! Give thanks to God who gave us artichokes to enjoy!
Note: Instead of the lemon butter, try a mix of Braggs and yogurt - also delicious to dip the leaves in! |

What I Know For Sure
by Oprah, on Snatam Kaur
from the current 'Oprah' magazine

I love the word 'delicious'. The way it rolls off my tongue delights me. And even more delectable than a delicious meal is a delicious experience, rich and layered like a fine coconut cake. I had one this past birthday - both the cake and the experience. It was one of those moments I call a 'God wink' - when, out of the blue, everything lines up just perfectly. Read more > |

Computer Corner
Where's It All Going?
By Guruka Singh
Many family members in our Sangat ask me about technology trends as well as for help in making decisions about what to buy. The last few weeks have seen the debut of the new model of the iPad along with the downloadable "consumer preview" of Microsoft Windows 8. Yes, the computer market is going through big changes. PC sales are down and tablets are selling like hotcakes. "Hotcakes?" Where did that expression come from? Do you buy a lot of hotcakes? Oh well...they're selling like...iPads! How's that? "My dear folks, ..., I am sharing with you my thought patterns and remember my words. Whosoever will do a little in this house (Hacienda de Guru Ram Das), God shall stand for the entire incarnation for the person. ...,whosoever shall serve this house, he shall be served forever. I am very sure of that."
