2012 Astrological Forecast | |
by Guru Daya Kaur
2012 will be a year of historic change. It is the end of the Mayan calendar, and therefore the beginning of a new year and a new world. We have just entered into the Age of Aquarius as per our beloved teacher, Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh. How is this playing out
astrologically?
Looking at the New Year's chart several aspects stand out. Pluto is conjunct the Sun, and is squaring Uranus. Jupiter and Saturn are in opposition. Neptune is poised to enter the sign of Pisces where it can work changes on the spirituality of the planet. The outer planets are generational and they are also involved in major world changes. Let's break these down to see what has happened with these aspects, and therefore what may happen.

Welcome! New Ashram Member - Gurvinderpal Singh
What brought you to Espanola?
I have been coming to Espanola for Summer Solstice since 2008. In the summer of 2008 I also did an internship with Sikhnet. I always felt at home here. A friend suggested I move here, so I did this past August.
How is it for you, living here?
It's beyond words - the warmth, the love, the coziness,...and the Guru, of course!
What do you spend most of your time doing?
Working at Akal Security in the AR Department, and doing Guru's seva.
Is there anything you would like to say to the Espanola sangat?
Thank you, so much, for being the lighthouses of Guru's warmth, love and radiance! |

Winter Solstice 2011
Kirpal Singh Khalsa, PhD.
After 37 years, Kirpal Kaur and I finally made it back to Winter Solstice. It was a wonderful, beautiful and uplifting experience. I really don't know what kept us away for so many years.
Our Espanola Sangat was well represented: Jagat Singh, Hari Jot Singh and Ravinder Singh were always in the kitchen; Justinder Singh made the Yogi Tea, Siri Deva Singh and Harimander Singh worked the dishwashing station; Anand Singh and Dharam Jot Singh ran the whole show with the help of Upma Kaur, Gurudev Kaur and Prabhu Prakash Kaur; Swaran Kaur and Kirpal Kaur set up and ran the Gurdwara; other busy locals included Sarab Sarang Singh, Sat Gurprasad Kaur, Guru Mustuk Singh, Charanjit Kaur, Prabhu Singh, Hari Singh, Dr. Siri Atma Singh and Nam Kaur. I ran the Yogi Bhajan Legacy classes which were a big hit. Our own Guru Kirin Kaur gracefully and with lots of smiles facilitated one of the three days of Tantric.
Attendance set a new record of 725 people. Many were attending their first Solstice. These enthusiastic newbies came from all over the world and dove into the experience with open hearts. It was lots of fun talking to them and hearing their stories. The weather was glorious the whole time. Sunsets over the lake were magnificent. I wouldn't be surprised to see a thousand people next year. Maybe we should all go!
Note: See three photos taken at Winter Solstice as the banner at the top of this newsletter, and more on the Espanola Ashram website's home page. |

Mehendi and How to Care for It
By Amanjeet Aysha Kaur
(Copyright 2011)
Mehendi is the art form of applying henna to the skin in artistic patterns. Henna is a plant also known as Lawsonia Inermis and it is native to India. It has been used for centuries by the people of India, Pakistan, and Morocco to color their hair, skin, and nails. To make henna the leaves of the henna plant are ground up, mixed with eucalyptus oil, lemon juice, and then mixed into a paste. Once the paste is ready for use it is placed into a pliable cone made from plastic, or it can be applied with a tooth pick. Applying henna with a cone is much like decorating a cake with icing extruded from a plastic bag. Since the henna goes on wet it is important not to smudge the design after it is applied.
The most common places henna is applied is to the hands, forearms, feet and legs up to just below the knee. Mehendi is typically worn by women for weddings, parties, religious functions, celebrations, and just to wear the beautiful art form.

Food for Health
Here are two recipes from Bibji, originally published in the December, 1972 edition of Beads of Truth magazine, an early 3HO publication:
SAAG (mustard greens)
Clean and coarsely chop 5 bunches of mustard greens, 5 stalks celery, and 2 inches of peeled gingerroot. Boil these in water for at least 2 hours, adding water as necessary to prevent scorching. Blend them smooth in a blender, or mash as well as you can.
Chop finely 2 onions and several cloves of garlic. Saute in sesame oil until browned. You may now add some caraway seeds, cayenne or a little curry powder. Now mix everything together (greens & onions). Let simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until thick, with no excess water. Add salt and pepper to taste. This is great served with yogurt, chapatis and mint chutney!
MINT CHUTNEY
Chop coarsely 4 onions. Take a large bowl full of fresh mint, wash, and remove leaves. Discard stems. You may also include some ginger root (peeled & chopped). Blend all this together with some salt and a little cayenne. So delicious! |

Computer Corner
By Guruka Singh
Of Tablets and Tools
I got lots of positive feedback about my comments in the November 2011 Computer Corner column regarding about the Apple iPad. Yes, it's true; I hardly ever use a laptop computer anymore. The iPad has pretty much replaced my laptop, and if I need to, I can simply turn my iPad into my office or home desktop computer using GoToMyPC which works great over a wi-fi connection and allows me to control my PC's remotely from anywhere. If you are considering a tablet computer, believe me, you want an iPad. The cheaper Android based tablets don't cut the mustard. My iPad has replaced both my Kindle eReader and my laptop. I love Apple's new iCloud, which automatically backs up all your Apple devices and syncs your music, apps, videos and photos wirelessly in the background without ever having to plug that white cable into your computer and run iTunes. We now return you to our regularly scheduled topic...Windows.
Little-known Windows tools
Some of the more useful apps in Windows 7 are hidden in plain sight - in the Accessories folder. For example, the Ease of Access tools found at the bottom of the Accessories list has a treasure trove of helpful utilities originally designed for sensory-impaired users.
Find your way to the Ease of Access Center
From the how-did-I-ever-live-without-it, screen-capture Snipping Tool to Sticky Notes to the surprisingly robust speech-recognition and text-to-speech app Narrator, Windows 7 has a worthy cache of utilities that can make everyday computing tasks easier and more useful. Read entire article > |
Yogi Bhajan, The Truth Can Set You Free by Hari Jiwan Singh
"Sure, come on in" was the Master's response to a woman standing in the doorway who I could barely hear between sniffles and crying "I hear your husband left you," the Master continued. Before she could come in and sit down, she was wailing again. The Master began to laugh. I could tell it was a forced laugh but she couldn't. He would do whatever was required to serve, even if it required methods outside of the ordinary. The woman looked up in astonishment. I could read her face. She was saying to herself, "Why is he laughing. I don't think this is a laughing matter."
"Isn't God great," the Master pleaded in response to her internal question. Again, I could see the look of bewilderment on her face as she struggled to make any sense out of what was happening. "Here, we've been trying to get rid of that guy for years, God finally does it for us with no karma attached, and we're upset. Now, that's really funny."
She got it. I could see the edges of her mouth bend gradually upward. She raised her head, looked straight at our Master, and began to smile as if she'd been caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Read entire article > |

If God has guided you here and has given you the virtue to do service here, and has given you that chance, then don't waste it. It's a place to gain and to be what is yours to be. Therefore, I say to you that take the very earth of this place and put it on your forehead. It will rewrite your destiny."
