This Month's UnSung Hero
Balwant Singh
Balwant Singh has been one of those "behind the scenes" sevadars who has been making prasad and tending to the Siri Guru Granth for so many years that no one can remember when he started. I asked him one day how long he's been overseeing the making of prasad and he said for at least 20 years. The same handfull of people have been making it that long right with him. The thing I find most appealing about Balwant is the quiet gentle laugh he makes when he talks with you and the sparkle in his eyes. Its his meditative nature and gentle manner that makes him such a valuable member of our community, always serving with tremendous humility and kindness. Thank you, Balwant for all you do for our sangat. |

Spring 2011 Women's Clothes Swap
By Jai Jeet Sangeet Kaur
The Spring Women's Clothes Swap will be in the Lungar Hall on Saturday, April 2nd. However, it will be a bit different. There is no viable location to store donations for the Swap this time, so I've reassessed the process of gathering, storing, sorting, and moving hundreds of pounds of donations every six months. Much as I love this seva, it has become too much for me, even with help. The plan is to have all donations brought directly to the Swap. Swap hours may change to accomodate this. Some few, limited exceptions may be made in cases where this is impossible, and one of the Swap team people can personally store a limited amounts of donations during the week before the Swap. I attempted to retire from this beloved seva some years ago. After almost ten years, and going on 20 Swaps, I am more than willing to hear creative ideas about ways we can continue this tradition of sharing, which I believe will become even more welcome in years to come. Please contact call me at 505-901-1409 or email: msdetail@khalsa.com
With love, appreciation and blessings,

Jai Te Gang - Guru Gobind's Eulogy to the Sword
By Dr. Kirpal S. Khalsa
Guru Gobind Singh's shabad, "Jai te Gang" is the introduction to his autobiographical work "Bachitar Natak" written in 1696 in Anandpur Sahib. This shabad is a mantra, complete in and of itself, in a similar way that the Mul Mantra, the introduction to Japji Sahib, is complete in naad, power and impact on consciousness. Siri Singh Sahib Ji referred to "Jai te Gang" as one complete and powerful mantra.
"It is a most powerful mantra by itself, and this is the only one shabad which is a complete mantra."
Guru Gobind Singh wrote his Bani to inspire the simple and peaceful farmers of the Punjab into the strongest and most courageous warriors in the world. In the words of the Siri Singh Sahib, "Let me tell you, this shabad is the total property of Guru Gobind Singh, given to us as a gift. And if you find a person very feeble, who has no grit, no courage, no self esteem... and you do the job of this shabad, the person will become totally tempered and can cut through any negativity."
"Jai te Gang" is often referred to as Guru Gobind Singh's Eulogy to the Sword. But it is not just any sword, it is the khanda, the double-edged sword. The khanda represents God, positive and negative are in total balance. Guru Ji used the khanda to create the amrit. Only the Khanda transforms the water into the nectar and transforms the Sikh into Khalsa. In "Jai te Gang" Guru Ji sings the wondrous praises of the Khanda. He worships the double-edged sword as he worships God. He seeks it refuge, it is his savior, it slices through the multitudes of fools, its radiance outshines the sun, it brings happiness to the saints and it is no less than Creator the World. To Guru Gobind Singh, the double-edged sword is God. The real power of the shabad is its naad - the impact of the combination and permutation of sound on consciousness. According to Siri Singh Sahib Ji:
The mantra "Jai Te Gang" "Te" stands for "tej," "taal," "life." And "ang" means the "self," "body." "Ang Sang Wahe Guru." And "te gang," there is the double "ang-aa" in it. That means you are part of my infinite light, power. And that's what we call it: "Te gang."
Over and over Guru Ji uses the nasal "ng" sound. This is created when the Punjabi vowel sound, tippi, is used. Nasalization is produced by directing a substantial part of the breath towards the nasal cavity as the sound is being uttered. The resulting "ng" sound directly vibrates the pineal gland, stimulates the third eye and opens the crown chakra. This shabad brings strength, courage and inspiration. This mantra is said to cut through your karma and erase negativity. The power and beauty of this shabad is best expressed by Siri Singh Sahib Ji: "You sing this shabad, hear this shabad, relate to this shabad, and from a begging bowl poverty, you shall have the royalty, imperial dignity and your grace. And that shall be the God's gift.

Bibi Jasbir Kaur Khalsa: Tribute to Doyenne of Gurmat Sangeet By Dr. Pashaura Singh
(from www.sikhchic.com)
Bibi Jasbir Kaur Khalsa, Chairperson of Sri Guru Gian Parkash Foundation, New Delhi, India, and a member of the Punjabi University Senate, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2011, at her residence in Ludhiana, Punjab.
The final moment came when she was offering ardaas after suffering a massive heart attack.
She was born on July 5, 1947 at Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, where her father, Sardar Harbans Singh, was serving in the Indian army. Her mother, Sardarni Narinder Kaur, was a devout Sikh lady and the President of Bebe Nanaki Istri Satsang, a Sikh women's group which was responsible for building a beautiful gurdwara in Model Town, Ludhiana, to celebrate the memory of Bebe Nanaki.

Answering the Call By Jiwan Joti Kaur
When Guru Terath Singh, Guru Simran Kaur (Ranch), and Christi (Wahe Guru Kaur's Mom) and I started training with the Red Cross last May, we had no idea that we would have our first real disaster right here in our own backyard.
Last Thursday, the media announced that everyone's gas would be turned off in Northern New Mexico; I received an email from the NM Red Cross to be on alert that we would be setting up a shelter in Espanola and Taos. By 2:30 that afternoon, we were at the Senior Center setting up cots and supplies. Within an hour, we were moved to the National Guard Armory, because it was thought we would need more space.
That first night was grueling; we didn't have any heat for the first few hours. The National Guard brought in generators and set up giant propane heaters with huge tubes to suck out the fumes. The National Guard was incredible. They worked tirelessly to help us in any way they could - cleaning toilets, washing pots, and moping the floors. We felt safe with them there.
In the beginning we had mostly elderly guests who had special needs which we were not equipped to serve. During the night, one had chest pains, requiring her to go to the hospital. By the next day, things were beginning to settle. We were able to get the neediest elderly admitted to nursing homes. As the Espanola Schools didn't have gas, there was no school. Their cooks made food for us in an Abiquiu school, run on propane, and Matamandir Singh organized trays of food to come over. Over the five days we were open, many restaurants, casinos, and stores sent over food and supplies for us (Cowgirl, Big Dog, La Cocina, Big Rock, Inn of the Delta, Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, and more). Our Shelter Manager, Christi, was constantly on the phone asking for food, but sometimes it just happened. Just when we thought we were going to run out of food, someone would walk in with food. It seemed like all we had to do was voice our needs. For example, Monday (our last day), we were out of milk for the kids. "Gosh, we need milk for the kids." Within an hour, someone from Tesuque Market walked in with milk for the kids. It was awesome. Read complete story >

March 2011 Do-Not-Track? "Opting Out" Is Probably Too Good to be True
We all know that Internet advertising is big business - currently around $25 billion as a matter of fact - and it's made so successful because of its ability to very accurately track consumer's behavior. Behavioral-based marketing targeting is a technique used by traditional and internet publishers and advertisers to greatly increase the effectiveness of their campaigns. In the past, marketing firms conducted surveys of readers' preferences and affiliations. Today, Internet marketing firms collect a lot of data associated with each individual's Internet behavior.
There's nothing (at least for now) that's illegal about the practice and the more information that can be gleaned about us and our shopping habits, the more profitable it is to the advertisers. Do you use Amazon.com? How about Google.com? Why is Google search so good and also completely free? It's because Google makes most of its money, not from ads, but from gathering information about your search habits and then reselling it to marketers (as well as government agencies.)

Turn to Turmeric Golden Milk for Achy Joints (from www.yogamint.com)
When your joints are stiff and sore, it's time to turn to turmeric - the Indian goddess of health and beauty - for some Ayurvedic support. This golden-yellow powder provides the active ingredient curcumin, traditionally used to reduce inflammation and relieve joint pain. Turmeric has many therapeutic properties, including aiding digestion, healing wounds and treating skin conditions, to mention just a few of its benefits. One way to enjoy this lovely spice is blended up in a foamy, hot yogic drink called Golden Milk. Get recipe here >

| Yogi Bhajan - Laugh til I Cried
By Hari Jiwan Singh
Today things just didn't go as planned, and this tweaked my memory to 25 years ago.
In September, 1985 I was driving the Siri Singh Sahib, Yogi Bhajan up to Santa Barbara, CA to a meeting. These were intimate times when I could ask him anything and everything. This particular day I asked him a rather mundane question, his answer was anything but.
In innocence and ignorance, I turned to him and said, "Sir, what do you do when you 'get out of bed on the wrong side." He immediately responded, "What's this wrong side of the bed?" I then automatically reminded myself that "English" isn't taught in idioms and explained, "Well, Sir, it's when you wake up and stub your toe getting out of bead, struggle to the bathroom and there's nothing left in the toothpaste, eventually you make it to the car and the battery is dead, etc. etc. etc. And, it gets worse with each successive occurrence. "Oh," he said, "that's easy, just laugh." "Laugh!" I exclaimed, "With all due respect sir, maybe you didn't hear me correctly" (what a mistake to say, but, anyway, it was many years ago). I repeated, "It means everything in the day is going wrong and it keeps getting worse." "O.K." he asserted, "then cry."
Countless times over the last 25 years, I've relied on this teaching. It's funny what makes the biggest impression. When things weren't going as I thought they should, I have been able to remind myself that my attitude (either laughing or crying) was my choice and that I could make the conscious choice. Literally, it's been a Godsend.

If God has guided you here and has given you the virtue to do service here, and has given you that chance, then don't waste it. It's a place to gain and to be what is yours to be. Therefore, I say to you that take the very earth of this place and put it on your forehead. It will rewrite your destiny."
