Global Meditation
November 6, 2010
By Sat Sundri Kaur

On Saturday, at the 6th of the month Gurdwara, from 6:00-7:02 pm, we will sing the beautiful shabad: Aap Sahaee Hoa Sachay Da Sachaa Dhoaa ~ "God himself has become my help and support, True is the support of the True Lord." This shabad was written by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the 5th Sikh Guru and brings divine protection and mental balance when chanted. The Siri Singh Sahib further explained that this shabad aids in penetrating the unknown without fear, eliminating enemies and blocking the impact of animosity forever. Many members of our worldwide Sangat are chanting this shabad. As we all unite in this practice, we can create the magnetic field of protection and prosperity for our beloved Dharma.

Sikh Dharma Worldwide has very graciously sent out this mantra on CD to all their donors.  If you would like to donate to Sikh Dharma Worldwide, please visit their website: http://sikhdharmaworldwide.org/
Also, they have produced their first newsletter which is available on request if you haven't already received it:  news@sikhdharmaworldwide.org.

Sat Darshan KaurThis Month's Unsung Hero is:

Sat Darshan Kaur

Sat Darshan Kaur is all heart and whenever someone is in need she is there to help. Her radiant smile and exuberance win you over even without her speaking a word.

She is a member of the Hearts and Hands COV, organizes 40-day meals for many of the young mothers, and constantly reaches out to help her aunties and uncles in the sangat. She has worked for KRI for many years in the summer courses. She is an invaluable team member having a natural ability to make the students feel nutured and cared for plus following through on every detail.

In addition, she is a loving support to her Spiritual mataji - Gurutej Kaur of Phoenix, who is quite ill. She takes time to fly to Phoenix to be with Gurutej and to help with her care when she can.

Sat Darshan is also an incredible creative being; loves doing bhangra, photography, cooking, art projects, making homemade cards, videos and more. She also loves organizing parties and social events and has coordinated many for her friends and the sangat.

She loves to travel with her husband, Krishan Shiva Singh. A few years ago Sat Darshan did a 40-day sadhana at the Golden Temple, arising early every morning to meditate and do seva.

Sat Darshan is truly a great friend to all and we are so grateful to her for all she does!

The Adi Shakti Club - Khalsa girls in action!
By Mataji GuruMeher Kaur

Sat Nam, We want to tell everyone about our new girl's club. It is for girls in our Sangat 6 years old and older. Now we have 6 members. Our first meeting was September 25, 2010, and we voted on our name, The Adi Shaktis, our slogan, "Khalsa Girls In Action", and our goal: to help our Ashram, our community and the world. We chose the hawk as our mascot because we are daughter's of Guru Gobind Singh and hawks live and fly in New Mexico and also India. We meet every other Saturday in our clubroom at the home of Grandma GuruMeher Kaur. We have our meeting, then we do arts and craft projects to work towards our goal. We take turns being the facilitator for each meeting.

We decided our first project would be a fund raiser Bazaar for the Wild Life Center. We have all visited the Center and we love how good the animals are cared for there. Many rescued animals are able to go back into the wild. We have been working very hard to create nice things for our Bazaar and we hope you all will find something to buy to help the Wild Life Center. A tenth of all the money will go to the Guru first. The Bazaar will be Sunday, Nov. 7th, after Langar.  We're very excited to share our crafts!

Being in the Adi Shaktis Club is lots of fun and we are learning about the needs of others at the same time. We look forward to more girls joining us as they get to be 6 years old or if other girls move to our Sangat. We're just getting started - we are Khalsa Girls in Action, for sure!

A big 'Thank You!' to Jai Jeet Sangeet Kaur and all of her stalwart helpers for organizing, setting up, and cleaning up the women's Fall Clothing Swap. It was a great success, and we are grateful for our newly replenished wardrobes. Hopefully next Spring we will hold another one, with the help of the women of the sangat.

Guru Gadde Day Nagar Kirtan
Guru Gaddee Day Nagar Kirtan

It seems like this last month was the busiest October I can remember, but then again, maybe all Octobers are this busy.  We started off with Siri Singh Sahib Remembrance Day; then Guru Ram Das' Birthday Gurdwara, which was preceeded by 11 days of chanting every evening; followed by

Guru Gadde Day Gurdwara
Guru Gaddee Day Gurdwara

Guru Gaddee Day Nagar Kirtan and Gurdwara; then the wedding of Hari Har Singh and Har Simrat Kaur; and finished the month off with a very fun Halloween Trick or Treat party and haunted house at the langar hall.  Whew!

Now we can look forward to a restful Fall with a sangat Thanksgiving dinner and our annual White Tantric Yoga Course.  So I leave you with a few pictures of the past events for your enjoyment!

Windows 7? Bah, Humbug

By Guruka Singh

Dell announced today it will no longer supply or support Windows XP, and Microsoft's support for Windows XP is rapidly fading and will end in 2012. I recommend you do switch to Windows 7, but you may not be ready for a new computer or for upgrading your current computer to Windows 7.

Before you read on, let me say that Microsoft is making Windows 7 available right now for a fantastic price. $125 for a three license pack! That's $42 for a license. Not so long ago, I paid $129 for a single license. This special price will expire in November 2010, so if you want to upgrade, act quickly! Here's the link: http://amzn.to/d49XUt

Okay, let's say that, for whatever reason, you've decided to dig in your heels and stick with Windows XP for as long as possible. Here's what you need to do:

There are a number of steps you can take now to ensure a finely tuned XP system for months - possibly years - to come.

Windows XP is almost a decade old, which in both computing and dog years makes it very long in the tooth! As I have said many times, I recommend moving to Windows 7, but you may not be ready or able to do that.

Microsoft has officially dropped support and security updates for all XP versions through Service Pack 2. The only version of 32-bit XP that still qualifies for Microsoft's security patches and major bug-fixes is the Service Pack 3 edition. (The relatively rare 64-bit flavor of XP is a special case. See Microsoft's explanation.)

Confide in My Wife

Someone asked me recently if I confide in my wife. What a great question.  At first I was taken aback by the question. I thought to myself, "What are we, girlfriends here?" I had to gather myself so I could answer the question properly. Before speaking, I reminded myself of the great value this society puts on inclusion, transparency, and communication. I didn't want to respond in a way that begs these issues without a full explanation. First, I prefaced my remarks by saying that I didn't want to appear exclusive, dogmatic or autocratic and asked them to hear the full answer before making any final conclusion.

The fact is, I don't confide in my wife because that's not what our relationship is based upon. I am aided by her projection; she is aided by my protection. In order for her projection to remain confident in my protection, it starts with my not allowing me to share any concerns with her. It ends with my having faith in not being concerned by concerns because if we are doing His work, His duty, His will, it only follows that it's His concern, not ours, and He will take care of it. That's Guru's promise.  Yes, I deal with these concerns, but they are issues, not concerns.  I don't worry about them. If I worry, my ability to protect and promote her physical, mental, and spiritual security is jeopardized. It's incumbent upon me to continue to believe. It's my Duty to remain faithful, and it's His greatness to bestow His grace and cover my honor.

So for me, confiding in my wife may do her great harm and that's not what will happen. It's my duty to protect her beautiful and faithful devotion to the Guru. I will not let her down and confide in any shortcomings which may currently occupy the neurotic part of my brain. I must and will be greater than my mind so I may be worthy of Guru's instruction and my wife's entrustment. Growth is dependent upon how He objectively allows me to view myself, and upon how much of that view I allow myself to see. Naturally, I confide only with myself as I am the harshest judge of me.

Conclusion: Thank God we have a Guru who takes us, good and bad, confiding with her or not!

Capellini with Artichoke Hearts

I've been sticking to quick and easy in the kitchen this week.  First up? Pasta. It used to be that if you went to one of the chain Italian restaurants in town, they offered one vegetarian dish: Capellini Pomodoro.  The other chain Italian restaurant in town also offered one vegetarian dish: Angel Hair with Artichoke Hearts.  Some years ago, I started making a dish at home that was kind of a combination of both dishes. Not everyone in my family digs the addition of the capers, but they're easy enough to avoid I think.  I love how light and flavorful it is...and I also find that it's yummy the next day as a chilled pasta salad.

 Serves 4-6

1 lb Capellini or Angel Hair Pasta

3 tbsp olive oil

5-7 cloves of fresh garlic, sliced

1 large tomato, diced (about 2 cups)

1 handful fresh basil leaves, chopped (1/2-3/4 cup)

1 3.5 oz jar of capers, drained

1 can of artichoke hearts, drained and quartered

salt and pepper to taste

grated parmesan for garnish
