Yogi Bhajan Remembrance Day October 6th

The light of Yogi Bhajan's spiritual essence continues to bless all humanity. On this day every year, we remember Yogi Bhajan and celebrate his life.

"You cannot understand yourself if you will not take the banner of the Guru and share with somebody next to you. It is one of the biggest reliefs. It is one of the biggest satisfactions. It is the total sum of our beings that we should be in a position to share with others the satisfaction, the calmness, and the integrity within ourself that we trust. To share one's inner trust with somebody is the most precious sharing... the most precious gift. And those of us who belong to the House of Guru must not be satisfied only in this fact that we are Sikhs. That's not enough. That should never be enough. But it should be our primary duty... our total understanding... and it should be our realism that with our songs and smiles and with our understanding and our peace... that with our tranquility and our projection, we must share with the other human beings the joy we have. That is the way our Gurus have led us to believe. That is the way we can reach out the world at large."

Our best selling item of the month...

Your Ashram Gift Shop is such a success. Come by and take a peek at all the goodies. Open Thursday's and Sunday's during langar.

Our featured products this month is Snatam Kaur's new CD, Divine Birth
Price: $18.00

Everything living thing on earth shares this: we all have a mother.  Even the little oak sprouts that came up in the spring were acorns dropped by their mother trees last year.  Snatam Kaur's new album "Divine Birth" is designed to support women during and after pregnancy, helping them to live up to their own destiny as a mother and supporting the development of the new life growing inside her, whether inside her womb or later on inside her heart.

Snatam and her mother Prabhu Nam Kaur, a soulful singer in her own right, unite on this album to sing prayers to Snatam's little girl and also to your children, whether born or unborn, to help them live up to their highest Divine potential.  Snatam and Prabhu Nam last sang together on their duet album "Mother's Blessing," where the deep love between them was first apparent to their audience.  It feels stronger here, as if the continuing cycle of life has brought them even closer together, now that Snatam herself is a mother and knows that every beat of a mother's heart is a prayer for her child.

This Month's Unsung Hero is:

Sangeet Kaur Khalsa

Sangeet and Manjit Kaur (Ruby's mom)

I think most everyone knows Sangeet Kaur for her operatic voice and inspirational kirtan.  However what you may not know, is how much more she does for our community and with a lot of heart and humility.

Besides working full-time as a speech pathologist at the Pojoaque Schools, she also volunteers many hours teaching kirtan to our own sangat children.  Every Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning she provides kirtan classes at the ashram.  The children respond with so much enthusiam in her classes and it shows when they have performed during Sunday Gurdwara.

She also gives her time as a member of the Hearts and Hands COV.  This group has made such a difference in our community with their selfless service for those in need during health crisis.

And of course, the CD's she has produced have become classics in the 3HO community.  Yogi Bhajan once commented that her first sadhana CD was the most accurate vibration of the Naad for the Aquarian Sadhana mantra.  You can find her CD's available at the Ashram Gift Shop and on the Spirit Voyage website. Her Guru Ram Das CD is one of the most popular and uplifting especially during this time of Guru Ram Das' birthday.

We thank you Sangeet, for being who you are and being such a wonderful part of our community!

This Month's New Community Member is: Shama

Many of you may recognize me because I lived here in Espanola last year and also back in 2004.  I do a lot of traveling as a consultant on American Culture.  Most recently I was in France.

Once a year I visit Gowindal Sahib to read Japji on the 84 steps, and this year was my 6th time.  I highly recommend visiting Gowindal at least once in your life, and if you have any questions about visiting there, feel free to ask me.

I always love staying near the Espanola Ashram when I'm in the states. I find great inspiration in reading the Akhand Path and have been reading at least three times a week. You can usually catch me on Thursdays helping out in the kitchen for the langar gathering.

Thanks for being such a great sangat !

Tarn Taran Kaur

Tarn Taran KaurTarn Taran Kaur is a world traveler and brings the teachings of the Siri Singh Sahib across the globe. Last year she lead Trainers for two Level 1 Aquarian Teacher Trainings, one in Mexico City and one in Puebla, Mexico.   She began mentoring Gurujodha Singh and Dev Amrit Kaur to become KRI Aquarian Teacher Trainers. Then her mentoring expanded to include Jai Ram Kaur, Guru Nam Kaur and Ram Ravi Singh.

This year she is the Lead Trainer for two Level 1 Aquarian Teacher Trainings, one in Mexico City and one in Monterrey, Mexico. Her mentoring team has expanded to include Prabhu Atma Kaur (Jai Hari's daughter) and Sat Purkh Singh (Arjan Kaur's son). The trainings are held once a month for 10 months. Tarn Taran travels to teach five of the sessions, with the other KRI trainers teaching some sessions, as well as the new applicants to the Aquarian Academy. (The Aquarian Academy is a body of KRI mentors and mentees). She also attends meeting with the Mexican Lead Trainers who assist in building community and good relations with each other.

Tarn Taran also teaches extensively in Europe. Next month she will return to Warsaw, Poland to offer a Conscious Pregnancy training. In the Spring she will be teaching five Level 2 trainings throughout Germany... in German! Tarn Taran Singh also travels extensively for KRI. The best is when they both can coordinate their schedules so they can meet in Istanbul, Germany, Cancun, Oaxaca...

Despite her demanding schedule she is an avid gardener and her garden was featured in last month's newsletter.  The garden is now fading and the vegetable bounty has almost all been picked. Even with the gardening season coming to an end, she is always so grateful to return to her home here in Espanola, where she enjoys the land and the beautiful expansive skies.

Growing Vegies during the Fall/Winter
When I posted a picture of our hoop house on Facebook last month, I was amazed at how many people were inspired by what they saw.  So I wanted to share this technique with all of you so you can be on your way to growing vegetables all year round.
Our first introduction to this technique, was by Ken Kuhne, who started a hoop house business called Grow Y' Own, here in Santa Fe.  He gave a workshop at the Santa Fe Greenhouses last year and we were fortunate enough to be able to attend.  Noor decided he could easily construct one of these structures for our home and got to work right away.  In a week we were planting starts and seeds in our new "minature greenhouse."

During our first winter we succeeded in growing swiss chard, lettuce and parsley.  In the summer our hoop house was filled with broccoli, sweet peas, more swiss chard, and some volunteer tomatoes that popped up from the compost.

In the winter months it is necessary to use a heating element of some sort and a protective cover to keep the heat in.  Noor devised a heating element with a thermostat and covered the entire hoop house with 3 mil plastic held on by plastic clips.  Ken does have a more sophisticated cover he sells which perfectly fit the frames he builds with a draw string around the bottom to keep the house air tight.  For more information about the kits you can buy online, go to Ken's website growyown.com.

If you would like to build one on your own, I don't think Noor would mind to share his plans with you.  Or you can watch a video I found on YouTube that features a similar hoop house plan. Watch here >

Microsoft Security Essentials!

By Guruka Singh

After almost a year of real-life testing, Microsoft's Security Essentials anti-malware application is batting 1.000.

All my test computers - a mix of Windows 7, Vista and XP systems (including two portables with 20,000 miles of travel) - remain malware and virus-free.

Over the past 20 years, I have used all the big-brand virus and Internet security software: McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky, etc. All of them did a great job doing what they were designed for - and they all slowed my computers down to a crawl. In 2008 I replaced Panda AV with Norton 360 and in 2010 I replaced Norton 360 with MSE.

Earlier this year, when Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) was still new, I decided to put it to an extensive real-life test by making it the only full-time security solution on my daily-use and portable PCs and all of our SikhNet computers. Now, after ten months of full-time use on nine different systems, MSE looks like a solid winner.

Baked Butternut Slices

This is another example of a super simple veggie side.  The great thing about preparing butternut squash in this way is that it requires less baking time than just halving it, but you end up with the same sweet goodness.
Preheat Oven to 375 degrees

1 large butternut squash, peeled and scraped of seeds and strings
2-3 tablespoons of butter, melted
salt and pepper to taste

Slice the butternut into 1/2" pieces. Brush the bottom of a large baking dish with butter and toss a little salt and pepper on top of the butter. Place the butternut slices in a single layer across the bottom of the baking dish.  Lightly brush the top of the slices with butter and sprinkle with salt and pepper.  Bake for 35 minutes or until the slices are tender.

Another Perspective
Hari Jiwan's Wall

Our beloved Siri Singh Sahib ji was continually teaching about "perpetual endurance."  That particular teaching always seemed a bit harsh to me.  In fact, it sounded like hell - at least until the blessings kicked in.  I didn't want to have to endure forever.  It's taken me too many years, but I've finally figured out the "get out of jail free" card.  Here it is: so long as I'm praying and meditating on "perpetually enduring," why not just add "effortless" onto the prayer.  After all, our teacher always taught us that prosperity has no limits.  Just because he was stronger than I, doesn't mean that my intuition/creativity can't help level the field.  I like to think that I can "perpetually endure," but life has enough challenges.  If I can eliminate as many as obstacles as possible, I will only have more time to focus on those that remain.

I have now added the word "effortless" to my practice without any guilt about following the Siri Singh Sahib ji's teachings.  I've come to realize that it actually pleases my teacher, my Guru, and God when I focus in their service and don't perceive any limits in their blessings.  I see this concept affirmed in our Dharma.  After so many years of service and devotion to our mission, the dedication just keeps paying off.  Our continued commitment to "perpetually enduring" has become "effortless perpetual endurance."  So now, I humbly request that we all refocus and rededicate our energy to effortless selfless service to our Dharma.  We now have time to stop and smell the roses.  Our duty has become an experienced, continued blessing.  This Dharma continues to be real and is waiting to be re-experienced.
