Our best selling item of the month...

Your Ashram Gift Shop is such a success. Come by and take a peek at all the goodies. Open Thursday's and Sunday's during langar.

Sahej CDOur featured product this month is the Dev Suroop Kaur's new CD, Sahej: Peaceful Acceptance
Price: $22

Sahej Peaceful Acceptance by Dev Suroop Kaur was inspired from deep love and respect for the vidiya, the study of knowledge, of Sikh Classical Raag Kirtan.

Relax into the warm embrace of this hypnotic presentation of four beautiful songs of the Sikh Gurus. Sung simply and sweetly in a classical raag kirtan style. Accompanied by the rhythmic tones of the tabla, by Guru Prakash Singh and the soaring voice of the violin, alto flute and clarinet, these compositions are a feast for the ears and heart. The CD cover art work is an original painting by Guru Jot Singh.

Clean up your Windows notification area

By Guruka Singh

When I'm working on someone else's computer I always check the right side of the taskbar (at the bottom of the screen)  to see how many icons are there. Why? On most PCs, the Windows notification area, originally meant for small apps you always want running, is choked with all sorts of programs that shouldn't be there and do nothing but use up memory and slow down your computer.

Putting some order back into the notification area will remove app clutter, plus it might help your PC boot faster and possibly fix those previously unexplainable system problems.

A special place for a special type of app
A lot of programs want to be in your PC's notification area, the area on the right-hand section of your taskbar that Microsoft used to call the system tray or systray. When you booted your new PC for the first time, an array of tiny icons probably decorated your notification area like medals on the chest of a tinhorn dictator. Half the programs you've installed since then have probably put their own icons there.

This Month's Unsung Hero:
Swaran Kaur Khalsa

This month we would like to honor Swaran Kaur for all of the extra heart and energy she puts into covering us all here at the ashram. She comes into the office early and leaves late just to get it all done. So when she walks around for sign ups to read from the Guru, if you indeed have the time treat yourself to some qaulity time with your Guru, sign up! Thank you, Swaran Kaur. We do indeed see all of the extra you put into everything you do.
This Month's New Community Members
Uttam Preet & FamilyThis month's featured new community family is Uttam Preet Kaur and her children, Alain and Nirankar Singh. They are living with the Kirpal's in their beautiful house in La Mesilla. They are living here until November, maybe even longer. They are from Bolivia.

Utam Preet Kaur came to assist with the Level I KRI training course and would love to take it herself someday soon. It is inspiring to see what their family has done in order to be within and around the ashram. Our prayer is that they are filled to the brim and able to be here as often as possible.
Many Blessings!

Kartika's babyWhat  a joy to welcome our newest member of the community Japjeet Singh, born June 12th around 2:00 am to Kartika Kaur and Ajai Singh. Perhaps you have seen him at Lungar or Gurdwara. We greet you with open and loving arms. Many prayers and blessings to the new parents. Enjoy all of the moments as it can go so quickly. May God and Guru bless your family now and  forever!Ajai and baby

Also, we would like to acknowledge Ajai Singh for the beautiful addition he makes to the Cherdi Kala Jetha with his exquisite guitar playing.  Now we can see (and hear) the lovely influence his musical mother, Sat Kartar Kaur, made on him.
Financial Report for HGRD Community Fund
HGRD Fund Drive
By GuruMeher Kaur, Sr.

Sat Nam.  As most of you know, the HGRD Finance Committee has been working very hard to enable ourselves to pay the ashram expenses, formerly covered by the SDNM Community Growth Funds.  Beginning in June, we actively enlisted the sangat's participation in giving to the new HGRD community funds, so we would like to give you an update on our progress.

Currently our financial goal is to bring in $9,000 per month, which would cover the ashram's budgeted and ongoing monthly expenses of $8,850 per month.  This may seem like a large amount to bring in each month, but if we all join together and contribute something on a regular basis, we can more than meet that goal.

We estimate, by counting the sangat members on our current phone list, that there are about 200 adults in our community, and we are hoping to get 100% participation.  As of the end of July, 55 people have generously given to HGRD and 44 people have given us a monthly pledge amount for continued giving.  So we are well on our way!

We raised over $11,000 in June and July, so we have enough to cover our first month's ashram expenses plus some to add towards September's bills.  We want to express our heartfelt thanks to all of you who have given your support.  Your contributions of all amounts, large and small, are deeply appreciated.

We have monthly pledges, including both EFT payments and monthly checks, of almost $3,700, so we urge each one of you to pledge your support to the Mother Ashram now.

It is our great blessing to live in this beautiful Hacienda de Guru Ram Das and to serve it however we can.  We are now honored with the responsibility of carrying Guru's mission forward, and it is great to know that whatever we give in God's and Guru's name will return to us many-fold and uplift our spirits in every way.  Ours is a diverse and wonderful community, and together we can unfold and uphold its grace and destiny.

Thank you again to everyone who participates and gives.  And thank you to all who will join us in giving in the future.  We will be available during langars to help you to sign up, and we will continue to give you updates on Hacienda de Guru Ram Das' financial status.

Gardening in Espanola
It seems like I spend hours during the winter, flipping through the colorful gardening catalogs, trying to decide what I'm going to grow in my garden the next summer.  Then spring arrives, and it's that puzzling time trying to figure out when to get my plants in the ground without freezing them and before the burning summer heat scorches them.  Also the challenge of the fierce spring winds tearing the fragile leaves and the hungry grasshoppers making their presence known by the gapping holes they leave behind. But somehow by the time August rolls around, I'm usually surprised by how many vegetables and herbs make it; enough to add to my summer meals and even some to share with my family and friends.

This year was particularly good for many gardeners because we had an exceptionally long cool spring and many plants got a good start.  I thought it would be great to feature some of the beautfiul gardens around the ashram in our next newsletter.  If you would like your garden featured, please send your picture and a short description of what you grew to khalsa44@hotmail.com

Greenhouse beetsThe ashram garden will be ready to harvest within the next couple weeks.  They recently purchased a tractor for their plot in the upper ashram field.  They will be selling their produce at Sunday langars soon so keep your eyes open for some wonderful organic produce.  If you would like to make a donation towards the garden upkeep and their newly acquired tractor, please contact Ravi Har Kaur at 753-4847 or rhk@kahsla.com.  To view their online garden page click here >

Hari Jiwan's Wall
Another Perspective

In our culture, the double edged sword is a symbol with various hidden meanings. The sword is a universal representation of balance, faith and work, the infinite and the finite.  Most commonly, it is used as a great motivational symbol.

In Gurmuki there is the word for the ultimate contentment or satisfaction, "santokh." This contentment is the infinite principle of life.  We strive to be at peace, contented, and satisfied where there is no separation between us and infinity, God.

Nevertheless, we don't just live in the totality of infinity; we live in the totality AND REALITY of infinity. The balance of the universe means that within this "santokh" there is also a state of dissatisfaction. This is the finite principle of reality - the motivation, and the work. Contentment without continued integrated motivation leads to fatalism. Work without "santokh" is endless drudgery, shallowness, and ego filled. This balance is achieved through: Perpetual Effortless Endurance. Stay tuned for more on this topic next month.

Spaghetti Squash with Pesto and Parmesan
This is a super simple gluten-free, vegetarian side dish...and it is so darn good. It doesn't require much effort at all if you have prepared pesto on hand. If you don't want the oven on for extended periods of time in the summer, you can microwave your squash.

Argentina and the 7th Lord of Miracles Tour
November 19, 2009
By Ram Das Singh

Buenos airesArgentina is the land of Tango, Pampas, Gauchos, and the best pizza on this side of the universe.  It is a rich country that is vibrant, energetic and well endowed with a rich culture. From the beauty of the north, the towering Andes to the west, the rich farmlands in the center and stunning glaciers of the south, Argentina has it all. And the crown jewels are its people. The Argentines are gracious, kind, smiling and full of life. Their exuberance is contagious, their style eclectic and their food "divine"!  This 7th Lord of Miracles Tour takes us on a whirlwind tour to 4 cities in Argentina. And we start with its glorious capital, Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires is well named after the clean fresh beautiful air that circulates in the city. It is a city with wonderful architecture in the European tradition and wide boulevards to enjoy. It sits on The Rio de la Plata which is so huge you think you are on the ocean. Buenos Aires is not only the capital of the country but the capital of nightlife. Everything starts after midnight and ends after the sun comes up. The rich blend of Italian and Criolla tradition is a joy to experience in its food, music and culture.

"If God has guided you here and has given you the virtue to do service here, and has given you that chance, then don't waste it. It's a place to gain and to be what is yours to be. Therefore, I say to you that take the very earth of this place and put it on your forehead. It will rewrite your destiny."
