Your Ashram Gift Shop is such a success. Come by and take a peek at all the goodies. Open Thursday's and Sunday's during langar.

Our featured product this month is the Shanti Peaceful Products - Klean Kanteen Price: $18.00

Our most popular size, 27 oz. Klean Kanteen™ Classic is made of 100% recyclable, 18/8, food-grade, stainless steel so it doesn't need a special lining like some other metal bottles. It's completely BPA-free and won't leach toxins or funky flavors into your water, juice, smoothie or drink of choice. Plus it weighs only 6.125 ounces and is incredibly durable, so it will last for years. The large-mouth design allows you to pour in big stuff like ice cubes, and makes cleaning your Klean Kanteen™ Classic as simple as washing it with mild soap and warm water or throwing it in the dishwasher. Yet the slim design fits into most cup holders and the Kanteen™ Bike Cage.

Keep you eyes open for more Shanti Peaceful Products being offered with the launching of Gurbani Kaur's new ecommerce website, coming soon!

Siri BrahmaSiri Brahma (aka James Brody)
By Siri Neel Kaur

Here is the poem that Siri Brahma's friend, Fred, sent to me.  On the day of Siri Brahma's Memorial in Santa Fe, Fred was remembering him by reading the Rumi poems in Pennsylvania that Siri Brahma had shared with him.  While reading this poem Siri Brahma seemed to appear and tell Fred to send this poem to me.  I do not know which book or whose translation this is.  This is so like Siri Brahma to find and read me a poem to explain or punctuate an experience.

Your grief for what you've lost holds a mirror,
Reflecting where you've been.

Expecting the worst, you look and instead
You see the joyful face of the one who loved you.

Your hand opens and closes and opens and closes.
If it were always one or the other, you would be paralyzed.

My deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding,
Both as beautifully balanced and coordinated as bird wings.

WHAT'S UP WITH THE COMMUNITY GARDEN for 2010?
By Ravi Har Kaur

The Beet House
Wondering what's happening in the Community Garden?  Well as all of you gardeners out there know, garden work begins long before you're poking seeds into the soil.  So back in February, the Community Sustainability Group met by the cozy fires in members' homes, and we began to plan our second season of growing veggies in the open greenhouse that Kartar and Gurbani are graciously letting us use once again.  We have lovingly dubbed this the "Beet House" due to the massive number of beets we grew there last year.

Ashram greenhouseBut to backtrack a little bit - last fall we decided to put the soil of the Beet House to rest in a way that would continue to nourish the soil throughout the winter. We decided to experiment with mulching with free and plentiful mulch materials - fallen leaves.  The workers at the ranch obliged us and dumped several truck loads of leaves from the Ranch down at the Beet House.  We happily spread them out in a layer that was probably 8 inches deep, and innocently said "Good night" to our sweet garden for the winter.  Had we been smart (like we are now) we would have mowed (yeap, with a lawn mower) those leaves to make them into a finer mulch that would absorb more moisture, helping them to decay faster.  read entire article here >

Manmandir and Guruminder Singh

Where from?
We moved here from Washington D.C. on our own. This community has been so supportive and welcoming. We love being here.

What brought you here?
We are both planning on going to nursing school. Manmandir Singh also has a dream of taking bhangra/Sikh dancing to Hollywood (because he loves to dance and you don't really see it in Hollywood yet). Our grandparents raised us as Sikhs. We knew we were supposed to be here. We also feel like we fit in better here than where we were.

Family and work?
Manmandir Singh works a part-time job at the Red Door Cafe. Guruminder is already in school.

Any Other Thoughts?
We would really like to thank this community for all of their support. No matter where we go, we feel welcome. Thank you Thank you!!

Wow! What beautiful decorations and flowers for Bashaki Day.

Thank you, Amrit Kaur for spearheading and holding the space for such amazing decorations. It made such a special perfect space.

NirbheNirbhe Kaur and Gurujohn kaur, can we ever thank you enough for all of your flower power! The pots by the new porch, the flowers by the pavillion, and the special garden in honor of your father by the ashram's east entrance are all so beautiful.

Also, the big pots in front of the Langar Hall and the beautiful vines in front of  the kitchen add such a gorgeous touch! Thank you for your energy, time, resources and love in blessing us all with these flowers.

May all of you be blessed ten times more for your selfless service.
Bowl for Kids' Sake - Saturday, April 17, 2010
Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS)
By Guru Meher Kaur, Jr.

Khalsa KatsThe Bowl for Kids Sake event at the Cities of Gold Bowling Alley was a great success!  We had two teams represented from the Sikh community; the Sunflower Team, led by Team Captain, Guru Simran Kaur and my team, the Khalsa Kats. We spent about 2 hours bowling, eating nachos and generally having a fun-filled afternoon with 16 other teams from the Rio Arriba and Santa Fe area. Ron, from the Santa Fe Big Brothers Big Sisters office, was the MC for the event and made awards throughout the afternoon.  Our youngest bowler on Khalsa Kats, Amrit Samrit Singh, pulled the first prize of the day by bowling the first gutter ball which made everyone burst out laughing.  However, he quickly improved as the day went on and we were all impressed by his good score.  Sat Want Singh was our top bowler of the day with Guru Daya Kaur an easy runner up.  The other members on our team included, Varnjeet Kaur and Siri Deva Singh.

Sunflower teamGuru Simran Kaur and Ek Ong Kar Kaur bowled with enthusiasm with two Littles (what they call the little sisters) on the other side of the bowling alley.  Combined, our 2 teams raised $1,428.  The total amount raised by the entire day's event was over $12,000!

If you are interested in getting involved with BBBS, there are many opportunities.  If you would like to become a Big Brother or Sister or a Lunch Buddy, you can call their district office in Santa Fe at 505-983-8360.  Also, they would love to have a member from the Sikh Community become a BBBS board member.  If you are interested in serving in this manner, please contact Andrea Maril, amaril@bbbsnorthernnm.org or 505-983-8360.

Paraguay and the 7th Lord of Miracles Tour - Chile
by Ram Das Singh

South America is a wonderful continent with wonderful people. The problem with it is that you love each place uniquely and it is very difficult to pick just one. Chile is the back bone of South America. It extends more than 3000 miles from north to south and includes absolutely every terrain and topography in the world. It is a land of Germans and Italians and Indigenous Peoples that work so hard that they are one of the only countries in the world that has a positive balance of payments. They are the richest country of South America with only 18 million Chile Tourpeople. The people themselves are fair with intensely dark hair. They are gracious, mannerful and kind. For 25 years, the sangat of Chile has grown in its devotion and love of Shabd Guru and Kundalini Yoga. There are so many teachers of Kundalini Yoga in Chile that you will find these teachings in every city, town and village of this wonderful country [more than 600]. And if you ever see them dance bhangra you will be impressed - they really know how to move!  Read entire story here >

My Computer Seems A Lot Slower Than When I Got It
By Guruka Singh

I get asked all the time, "What is the best way to speed up my PC?"

The answer is...it depends.

Oh you were expecting a quick fix?

If you really want to speed up your PC, take the time to read this article all the way through from start to finish as each step builds upon the previous one.

Buy More RAM.  RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is a key hardware component inside your computer. The rule of thumb is: the more RAM you have, the faster your computer can access recently used data and therefore process information faster. Using a word processing document as an example, this is how your computer processes data:
  • A document is stored on the hard drive.
  • When you want to make changes to the document, it is retrieved from the hard drive and loaded into RAM (memory), along with the word processor program.
  • As you make changes to the document, it is processed by the Central Processing Unit (CPU) or "processor."
  • Changes to the document are made in "real time" in RAM (memory).
  • When you save the document, it is read from RAM and written back to the hard drive.

"If God has guided you here and has given you the virtue to do service here, and has given you that chance, then don't waste it. It's a place to gain and to be what is yours to be. Therefore, I say to you that take the very earth of this place and put it on your forehead. It will rewrite your destiny."
