Representative Ben Ray Lujan visits the Ashram

We had the pleasure of a visit byRep. Ben Lujan and BibijiCongressman Ben Ray Lujan who is the Representative for New Mexico's 3rd district (Santa Fe and Rio Arriba County).

He made time to sit with us in Sunday Gurdwara, partake of langar and talk with many members of our community about their issues and concerns.  He was presented with a beautiful kirpan from the sangat, to honor him for his long-time friendship with the community and the hard work he does for us on a national level.  Bibiji and Kulbir were also present to welcome him.

He reminded us that there will be a Primary Election on June 1, 2010 for Federal and State candidates.  For more information about who is running and where to vote, go to the NM Secretary of State Website >
Bowl for Kids' Sake - Saturday, April 17, 2010
Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS)

Once a year BBBS sponsors a fun bowling event at our local bowling alley (this year in Pojoaque) to raise money for their services.  This is their biggest fundraising event of the year!  Big Brothers Big Sisters provides quality one-on-one mentoring services for children in need in our community. Research shows that children in their program are less likely to indulge in drug and alcohol use,  engage in violent behavior or skip school. Now that's something we should all want to support!
Bowl for Kids Sake
Our sangat has participated in the Bowl for Kid's Sake for the last 3 years.  We raised over $1200 last year and would like to exceed that in 2010.  If you would like to help out you can choose one of the following options:
  1. Sign up and start your own five member team.
  2. Volunteer to be a bowler on a team  (Each team needs five bowlers).  Each bowler will raise $100 for the team. Your reward is to bowl for free with the team, get a free t-shirt and snacks on April 17.  Getting donations is pretty easy just by asking friends, family or business associates.
  3. Support a bowler by donating a minimum of $10 or 10 cents per pin they score.
For more information on how to get involved, contact Guru Meher Kaur, Jr. at 747-1476 or email me at khalsa44@hotmail.com. I will be at langars with pledge sheets, so please seek me out (as well as the other bowlers) to make your donation. Also to read more about what BBBS does go to their website.

I love being a part of this community and find value in it because:

We have one of the most beautiful Gurdwaras in the world!  I  love coming on Sundays to meditate, relax and enjoy the sangat.  I am so grateful for all of the seva that happens just to maintain our Gurdwara and for the opportunity to do seva as well.

Being a teacher is sometimes demanding and in the satsangat I can relax and restore myself to prepare for the next week.  I also find so much pleasure in being with my friends- some I have known for over 30 years!  Bless us all!

Something you may not know about me:
My mother was quite an athlete.  Three holes in one!  A gold tournament named after her and physically very fit up until her passing!  This translated to me as having a love of  exercise. I enjoy challenging myself especially out-of-doors! When I was younger in the San Diego ashram, I joined a group of Khalsas on a survival course.  I was the only woman!  It was hard but a lot of fun!

Now I help others to be their best though yoga, meditation and pilates.  My business has doubled this year even in the recession!
I encourage everyone to teach at least one yoga class a week just to help others with all of our amazing technology.  It is very fulfilling and truly helps keep me practicing.

Would also like to share:
Thanks everyone for being so great!  Keep up! If you are interested in a personal postural consultation using yoga and pilates or need some potassium alum, call at 575-751-1335.

Ravinder SinghRavinder Singh Khalsa

This month we would like to honor Ravinder Singh. There has been many times when something needed to be done or a very late slot needed to be filled in the Akhand Panth and Ravinder has always been willing to step forward to serve.

It is especially a treat to watch Ravinder prepare Langar. His chanting and spirit inspire all who are in the kitchen and you can feel his loving chanting entering the food.

Thank you Ravinder for your dedication, service and inspiring example in service.

May God and Guru Bless you now and forever!

Windows shortcuts can boost your efficiency
By Guruka Singh

In my January 2010 column I gave everyone a list of easy-to-use Windows shortcut keys (Fast access to Win7 resources via the keyboard ) and this month, I'll expand on that with some more tips to help you work faster and more efficiently. The fact is, constantly moving your hands between the keyboard and mouse is not the most efficient way to interact with our computers, but many of us doggedly stick to it.

If you take a little time to learn (or relearn) a few basic keyboard and mouse shortcuts, and then start practicing using them, you can blaze through your Windows faster and more easily - and possibly put less stress on your overworked hands as well.

Launch your favorite applications faster
There are several ways to launch apps quickly, using either mouse or keyboard.

Direct method: You can assign keystrokes to launch any shortcut. Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties. On the Shortcut tab, click in the Shortcut key box and then press the keys you want to use to launch the shortcut. Click OK.

A word of warning: Be careful not to reassign other useful keyboard shortcuts you may have already assigned. Also, you can assign keyboard shortcuts only to icon shortcuts - not the actual icon of a document or application.

Dear Sangat,

I wish to thank all members of the Sangat for the unconditional support throughout the last few months. I have been through a great deal of physical, emotional, and spiritual discomfort. Though I have been assured that not only is this normal but good for me. (I have to keep reassuring myself how good it is). I have moved around so much in the last few years that I have never had much support.

I would also like to recognize some special people that have been exceptionally gracious to me. Dharm Singh and Guru Kirin, Hari Jiwan and Sat Bachan, Guru Darbar and Guru Prakash, Jaap Kaur, the Gurukas, Siri Mukta and Ruby, Dharma and Hari Mander Kaur, both Guru Meher Kaur's, Guru Prem, Satsangeet and my great and wonderful friend Jagat. This is just a written note of thanks to this community. I think it is important that the whole community realizes it's intrinsic value to individuals that are on a spiritual path and in need of support. So once again , thank you to the Espanola Ashram Sangat.

Love and Blessings, Sukhbir Singh

May 10-14, 2010

Offered for the first time by the Espanola "Mother Ashram" and facilitated by Jugat Guru Singh of the Cherdi Kala (and formally trained by the Master of Sat Nam Rasayan, Guru Dev Singh). A special invite is extended to those who would like to join in 11,000 repetitions of Guru Ram Das' shabad, Kundalini Surjhee. It will take 62 hours (5 days) to complete the meditation. This shabad helps one to distinguish what is real and what is maya. This experience will give you the direct impact of the Shabd Guru (a spiritual teacher).

The meditation is limited to 200 people.  The cost is $399 which includes meals and shared lodging for seven days. If you don't need lodging you will recieve a $100 credit.  To register, please contact Jaap Kaur at jaap@jaapsshop.com.
