The Siri Singh Sahib's Presence at the New Mexico Legislature Still Alive
By Hari Jiwan Singh
This has been a fantastic week for the Sikh Community's political outreach and relationship building. On Tuesday, January 19th, the Sikh Community of New Mexico hosted our annual luncheon for the opening of the New Mexico Legislature at India Palace in Santa Fe. Senator Udall, Governor Richardson, Lieutenant Governor Denish, Attorney General Gary King, New Mexico Supreme Court Justices, Appellate Court Judges, and many, many others attended. All who participated considered it the best since the last time the Siri Singh Sahib ji was present. Everyone noticed the Siri Singh Sahib ji's subtle presence, smiling and saying "Now, that's keeping up with what I taught you." This common experience translated into a noble occasion for everyone in attendance. It was a elevated time for all involved. Tuesday evening, we attended the annual Democratic dinner where our presence was greatly appreciated and noted. After all, how could we be missed! The dinner was devoted to a tribute to former Governor Bruce King who recently passed away. He was a great friend of the Siri Singh Sahib and the New Mexico Sikh Community, a valued leader, and a great man. It was wonderful to see him honored and acknowledged by everyone. In fact, Attorney General Gary King, his son, spoke and was genuinely humbled by the out flowing of love for the man who did so much. At times he was too broken up to speak - he's a chip off the old block.

International Guests Visit Sikh Community in New Mexico
By Ek Ong Kaar Kaur
Guests from the People's Republic of China and from Tibet came to visit the Hacienda de Guru Ram Das ashram in Espanola, New Mexico on Monday, Nov. 16th. The guests were part of a US Department of State program that brings international community leaders to the United States to tour and become familiar with US culture, people, politics and practices. The guests on this tour included: Mr. Luo Sang Cicheng Pengcuo, a Tibetan Lama from the Lucan Monastery in Guinan County, Qinghai Province who is considered the 6th reincarnation of the Jiamao Lama; Mr. Guanghi Wang, a Christian Pastor from Nanchong; and Ms. De Qian Wang Mu, a folk singer from Tibet.
These international guests were touring many cities in the United States. The purpose of their visit was to learn more about religious freedom in the United States, and the impact of religion on US politics. They were interested in hearing how US law protects and encourages religious faith and freedom, and how culture and religious practices in the United States are intertwined. The group was accompanied by Herb Thomas of the Santa Fe Council on International Relations (www.santefcouncil.org) who hosted the group during their time in Santa Fe; as well as by Joshua Hendryx, the group's interpreter.

This Month's Featured New Community Member
Hari Rattan Kaur
I am delighted to be a new member of the Hacienda de Guru Ram Das community. During the past year I have met many fascinating, warm people who are deeply committed to their spiritual practice. While Sikh Dharma and ashram sort through many important issues, the discussions are lively, filled with humor, respect and depth. I believe all of this vibrates out into the world. I love the fabulous musicians and Gudwara services, which give us strength and unity. For most of my life I lived in Minnesota , where cultural and non-profit life is strong. I had a five-acre property that was kept as a nature preserve, with four llamas. Here I love to walk in the mountains. My daughter, Arianne (Siri Bani), is a senior at Reed College in Portland, majoring in Chinese. She hopes to visit over spring break. Professionally I am both a lawyer (JD) and child therapist (LISW). As a lawyer I enjoy working with business people, helping bring their creative ideas into practical results. As a child therapist, my specialty is gifted and talented children. I've also had the pleasure of teaching classes on developing intuitive intelligence. Each day my life is enriched by a strong Kundalini Yoga set, built on the strong foundation of Level 1 Teacher Training. Right now I am enthusiastically engaged in developing workshops that incorporate Kundalini Yoga. They focus on Harmonious Leadership, prosperity and grounding. I look forward to many happy years living and participating in this creative and uplifting community.
With many blessings to you all,
Hari Rattan Kaur |
This Month's Featured Unsung Hero!
Thank you for your selfless service!
This month we would like to honor Shanti Kaur Khalsa. Over the past few months the community has been finding ways to define itself, heal itself and create a structure that can serve us now and into the future. Though many of us are involved in this process, Shanti Kaur has consistently, time and time again, put her self in the forefront of this process taking on the good and the bad in order to make our path together more defined, clear and honorable. Thank you, Shanti, for putting yourself out there, risking so much and often times by yourself. Your countless hours of seva and commitment to this community will indeed serve you unto infinity! May God and Guru Ram Das bless you and yours now and forever. |
Sikh Kids Feed Local Children By Guru Simran Kaur
During the holiday season many people make a donation to feed the homeless or poor people. However the truth is, people are hungry all year long, not just over the holidays. And hunger is especially hard on children. Just imagine...when our own lunch is late, we get easily irritated and are no longer focused. When they are hungry, kids can't focus either, and they get irritated as well. During school days, many schools provide a breakfast and lunch. But what are those kids to do on the weekends? For some low income children, "no school today" means little or no food at all to eat. This is true every weekend as well. read entire article >

Sessions with the Master
by Dr. Jivan Joti Kaur
Some of you may be wondering why you haven't seen me much in
the last 2 months. I have been dealing with some fairly challenging health
issues. I have an autoimmune disorder, which compromises my immune system. This fall and winter, with so many viruses
going around, I have had them pretty much back-to-back. In this time, though, I
have experienced many blessings, one of which I want to share with you here.
Last August, in the process of having our Gurdwara repainted,
I put the Siri Singh Sahib's (Yogi Bhajan) Tratakum photo on the wall with a
shelf underneath it, with candles and crystals. It made a big difference to
have him properly installed in a special way in the Gurdwara. He feels very
happy there.
In October, I got the message that I should meditate on the Siri Singh Sahib's
photo every day. How long I sit there varies according to what is being worked
but about 60+ minutes. Every day it feels like I am having "sessions"
with my spiritual teacher. Gazing at his
photo, I felt lifetimes of "stuff" melting away. Now, it feels like
we are in the "rebuild" stage.
He talks to me, gives me guidance, and tells me the next step of my
healing.

Computer Corner Why Did My Computer Restart By Itself?
By Guruka Singh
Have you ever left your computer only to come back in the morning and
find that it has restarted all by itself and you have lost whatever you
were working on?
When
you have Microsoft Updates turned on, and the update requires a
restart, your computer will most likely shut down all by itself and
then restart, usually around 3 AM. It's important to take steps to
ensure that you don't lose data due to these unexpected post-update
reboots.
Let's face it, no one likes rebooting. At best,
rebooting requires that you start your work session over. At worst, if
you've set Windows to update automatically, any open documents may
close without giving you a chance to save your information. read entire article >
