You in Community                                        October 2009

Community is our collective giving, loving, sharing and growing. This new monthly bulletin celebrates and highlights the many individuals and projects that create and sustain our beloved mother ashram. As we give, we do receive.  Here's celebrating you in community!

Mataji GurumeherThis month we would like to honor Gurumeher Kaur Sr. as she retires from serving the Mother Ashram Secretary for over seven years. There is not a big enough way to thank you for all of your thoughtful and loving service through the years. May you be blessed now and forever!

I love being part of community because....

This is my path.  I don't belong anywhere else.

Something people might not know about me:
After all these years, I can't imagine what that could possibly be!

I would also like to share:
This personal hukam from my teacher, Siri Singh Sahib Yogi Ji, "You tell stories and give hugs. That's what grandmas do." I believe that says it all.

Gurumeher Kaur Khalsa, "Divine Mataji"

On May 12, 2002, Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib wrote Gurumeher Kaur a letter: "Thank you for your years of dedicated service and inspired grace. You have won our hearts. You have held our hands, watched over us and comforted us. We honor your nobility and grace."

He gave her the honorary title of "Divine Mataji."

Unsung Hero
Thank you for your selfless service!
 Harimander Singh
This month we would like to thank Harimandir Singh for serving the ashrams audio and visual needs over many years. With every ashram event Harimandir has always made sure we were properly set up in order to produce the audio and visual qaulity needed to be successful. Many times he has ended up carrying heavy equipment by himself from one storage place to another. He is usually the one working before an event and long after an event, dealing with the audio and visual equipment. He truly cares about people having a great experience and serving the ashram. Thank you, Harimandir Singh. May you be blessed now and forever for you tireless seva!

Guru Gadee Day Gurdwara Address
Siri Singh Sahib Ji
October 29, 2000

Hail hail to this day. Bow, bow many times. Get to your heart. And bow your head. Today was the day on this planet Earth that one graceful man who became merged with God - tested, tested, and rested a time scheme and freed man from the bondage of another man.

This was the day when we received Shabd Guru as the Guide to bow to, to understand, to read, to study, to guide us forever. It was the first time man's soul became independent. This sovereignty of man's spirit was celebrated by all of us this morning. And we are in the congregation of that, remembering, understanding deep in us. It did not disconnect us from each other. It gave us a connection, a very precious connection between heavens and earth, between finite and infinity, between values and virtues, between grace and the race of mankind.

There was oneness of God - the separation ended - a union took place. And man understood that God is within, and all barriers were dropped. Man understands that a snake can take away the old skin and live with the new. Exactly we can get rid of this skin - the cover of the ego - and live new, being precious, being gracious, and being virtuous. Virtues and values become - partake of life, rather than fears and calamities and death and... God, there's a long list I'm not going to repeat this morning.

Tribute to Mataji GuruMeher Kaur
By Hari Hari Kaur

Yesterday I found out the Mata GuruMeher Kaur, Sr. will be ending her seven year term as ashram secretary.  I would like to take this opportunity to make a tribute of gratitude and applause on behalf of myself and all of our sangat for the "above and beyond" job she has performed in her capacity.

Mata GuruMeher Kaur, like all good Geminis, was always able to flex easily to the changing needs of her position.  On a second's notice she would flow from wearing the traditional Secretary "Hat" (Turban), to the Hostess Turban including southern charm and hospitality, to the Tour Guide Historian when new people came through, to the essential Mahan Akand Path Sevadar.  She never missed a beat. She performed these duties week after week, barely missing a day throughout her 7th decade of life!

Separating the Wheat from the Chaff
Sun, Apple and Microsoft install chaff with patches

When you apply a security update for one of the programs on your PC, beware of uninvited software that wants to come along for the ride.
Vendors are more and more often going over the line, piggy-backing unsolicited commercial products and services onto crucial security patches.

If you're like many people, you were tricked into installing Apple's Safari browser as part of an iTunes or QuickTime update - a marketing tactic the company has been employing for more than a year.
You may also have succumbed to Microsoft's incessant offer of Silverlight and Office Live as part of the Microsoft Update service. And you may have tired of saying "no!" to downloading Internet Explorer 8.
Now, the latest Sun Java update shows how cavalier some vendors have become in taking advantage of software updates, including vital security patches.

The latest Sun Java SE Update 16 (6u16), released on Aug. 11, includes seven security updates and fixes a few bugs. What the release notes don't document, however, is that this update comes with a surprise.
