Summer Employment Experience at ATRC
By Onkar Nerurkar at Ho'opono

I have been working as a summer intern since 2009.  This internship was organized by my DVR counselor at Ho'opono Rehabilitation Center of the Pacific.  ATRC has been running a summer employment program to help students with visual disabilities, like me, gain work experience in a position that could be a career choice.  As a young adult, I always have had a fascination for technology, especially how to use technology to create positive change in life; and this summer employment program at ATRC has provided me with some valuable experiences that I would like to highlight here.

First, I achieved hands-on experience with assistive technology (AT).  This opportunity has opened doors for me as I have been able to see what a hugh impact I can make on other people's lives.  When I first started working at ATRC, I did not know what to expect or know how to work with clients with hearing and learning disabilities.  Learning by doing, I gained the knowledge and experience myself by providing services to ATRC clients with hearing impairments.  Working at the center I realized that I would not be able assist and educate someone with AT if I did not have information on his/her background, type of disability he/she has, and the purpose(s) for using.

Onkar Training

In addition, I have been give the opportunity to provide AT demonstrations for both individuals and (small and large) groups of ATRC clients.  I have learned that in order to teach someone technology, I must take one step at a time.  Sometimes, I had to explain the concept multiple times to help clients understand how to use the product properly and efficiently.  Working with clients has helped me with my communication, public speaking skills, overall confidence, and patience.

Teamwork is another skill I have learned and experienced while working at ATRC.  I had to collaborate with co-workers to accomplish tasks and missions to meet deadlines, such as writing electronic bulletins and client training.  I have realized that in an office environment, one needs collaboration and coordination skills to implement work efficiently.

All these experiences would have not been possible without the help of my DVR counselor - Annette Tashiro.  Also, I would like to extend my thanks to Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong, the CEO of ATRC as well as her staff, for employing and educating me during my internship at the organization.  Whether as an employee or a volunteer, I will continue working at ATRC and helping individuals at AT.
