Farewell to Summer Volunteer
& Welcome Student Intern
| |
ATRC would like to thank student volunteeer Rigor Pe Benito for dedicating his summer at ATRC. Rigor, a hearing impaired "local-boy" from Ewa Beach, is studying at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) majoring in Business Technology/Accounting. Home for the summer, Rigor gained on-the-job experience working with ATRC's bookkeeper and administrative staff. He learned various administrative duties and also experienced hands-on use of AT devices such as the iPad2 and ZoomText, a magnifiying screen reader program. _____________________________________ Student Intern Purt Robinson, a "local boy" from Waianae, is currently studying Business and Finance at Job Corps Hawaii.
After graduating from Waianae High School in 2005, he traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana to study computer science for a couple of semesters but returned home after experiencing the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. Purt began his internship at ATRC last month and is a wonderful asset to ATRC with his great attitude and desire to learn about computers and technology. |

ATRC Partnering with Ho'opono
| |
|
ATRC partnered with Ho'opono's Leadership Team and the Summer Employment Experience Delegates this summer and welcomed 16 students into their AT Zone for hands-on assistive technology training.
ATRC's efforts to support such programs directly effects the future of persons with disabilities entering the workforce. Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist Annette Tashiro of Ho'opono stated, "In FY 2010 Hawaii State Vocational Rehabilitation Services of for the Blind Division served 6,670 individuals with disabilities but only 370 achieved successful employment outcomes. Sadly, VR Counselors at Ho'opono placed only 10 individuals with severe visually impairments into competitive employment. Yet, because of your efforts, this past summer, Ho'opono was able to provide 16 participants (ages 14-25) with a Summer Employment Experience program."

AT Success Stories

Apple iPad
"My soon to be 4 year old son has albinism and we were fortunate enough to get an iPad just for him! It's amazing the progress we've seen in his desire to want to learn to write and trace letters of the alphabet- there are so many fantastic apps that are useful and helpful in preparing him to start school next year. And he just knows how to use it, we really didn't have to show him much at all, what a great educational tool!" Check out the iPad2 at an Apple Store or visit the AT Zone at ATRC.
