ATRC CELEBRATES THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF ADA

ATRC, among other organizations, celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) at the State Capitol on Monday, July 26. A proclamation was given by Governor Linda Lingle to commemorate this anniversary.

Toni Russ and Camper Cooler, Johnny Edwards, ATRC's newest volunteers put together this wonderful photomontage of the celebration.

Despite the loss of two great employees, ATRC will continue to provide quality service, training and information to the community. Stay tuned as new options are combined with our current activities.
MAKING MOVIE MAGIC AT CAMP COOL

"Lights! Camera! ACTION!" - the theme of Camp Cool.  Seventeen campers planned and wrote script for a short video that incorporated assistive technology so that everyone regardless of challenges could participate in the story.  One team created an accessible supermarket, another an accessible living room and the third and accessible classroom.

With the help of camp counselors, the campers produced 3 to 5 minute videos by storyboarding their scenes, setting scenes with props and filming their stories.  All the campers produced creative films using assistive technology, such as how would students with various disabilities be able to take a test or how would you navigate your living room if you are in a wheelchair.

Besides making their videos, campers were able to learn how to use a digital camera and interactive computer software games and programs. Of course, it wouldn't be Camp Cool without a mini Carnival and store, which the campers truly enjoyed!

Camp ended with a red carpet and movie showing of the three videos the campers produced. Every camper was given a "Shave Ice Oscar" trophy and certificate from our executive director Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong!

AT SUCCESS: CHARLOTTE TOWNSEND

Charlotte Townsend was able to complete the installation of a concrete ramp and walkway in June. She can now access her front door of her condominium from her parking space with this ramp and walkway.  All this was made possible through ATRC's HAT Loan Program.

"I am truly grateful for the simple and uncomplicated application and approval process and for Jodi Asato, ATRC Deputy Director, and Alan Shimozono from American Savings Bank who were wonderful to work with and very professional in executing all of the details and timeframes," wrote Townsend.

"As a consumer with a disability who is currently employed I was turned down from other rehabilitation loans to modify my home for access because I made too much money, regardless of the need to get to and from my home in order to stay employed."

Like Townsend, ATRC can help you.  If you would like information on our HAT Loan Program, contact Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong at 532.7112 or barbara@atrc.org.
