Parents and Professionals Learn about ATRC at HIDA Event

HIDA Presentation 3/16/10

ATRC presented to the Hawaii International Dyslexia Association at training event on March 16, 2010. Parents and professionals had an opportunity to learn more about Assistive Technology tools for their students with dyslexia and other disabilities.

Over 90 people attended the event, including HIDA's staff. ATRC presented information on various AT devices, hardware and software, as well as provided an opportunity for everyone to try the AT after the presentation. The event was well received and ATRC's staff fielded numerous questions regarding new and old technology, and ATRC's programs and services.

"We look forward to a continued partnership with HIDA," said Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong, ATRC's executive director. "The event has generated great interest in ATRC's programs and services, and we look forward to assisting all the parents and professionals we met with."

ATRC Joins Computers for Youth's Affiliate Network

Technology and children are two important missions for ATRC and now, ATRC will be able to incorporate both in our newest partnership with Computers for Youth (CFY). CFY is a national educational non-profit organization launched in 1999 that is dedicated to improving the home learning environment of low-income school children.

"As a part of CFY's Affiliate Network, ATRC will benefit from CFY's knowledge and experience in improving the home learning environment of low-income children," said ATRC's executive director Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong. "CYF sought out our organization because they wanted to make sure that there hardware and software distribution program did not exclude children with disabilities."

The Affiliate Network provides members with the products and services to more efficiently implement their programs while increasing the depth of services offered to their constituencies.

CFY partners with schools to improve the educational resources available in children's homes, enhance parent-child interaction around learning and help teachers make powerful links between the classroom and the home. For more information, visit www.cfy.org.

New Shipping Fees to be Instated at ATRC

computerFor those receiving a computer from our computer redistribution program effective April 15, there is a charge of $35 for shipping, if the computer is mailed by ATRC. For those items offered through the Loan Bank fees will also apply.

"With the current state of the economy, and the cost increase, we regret that after 19 years of free postage, we can no longer continue to offer this", said Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong, ATRC's executive director. "As much as we want to not charge shipping fees, we no longer can sustain ourselves without the help of our consumers."

Payment will be made by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or by check prior to shipment.

"We appreciate the understanding and support from the community during these tough times," said Fischlowitz-Leong.
