ATRC Seeking Donations To Aid People  With Disabilities In American Samoa

ATRC has set up an assistive Samoa Earthquake Photo 1technology (AT) fund for people with disabilities that have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami in American Samoa. Monetary donations are strongly requested and the fund will purchase equipment for those who have lost their AT devices, which could include power wheelchairs, speech and hearing devices, or specialized computers and software.

"Assistive technology is an integral part of a person with a disability's life, as it can assist with communication, eating, vision, hearing, or breathing," said Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong, ATRC's executive director. "When Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana, hundreds of people with disabilities were displaced from their AT and AT was the last thing that was supplied to them. Hawaii has a close connect with many Samoan families and we want to help those who lost their AT and get them back to everyday life."

You may donate through ATRC's web site, www.atrc.org, with a note that the contribution is for AT for American Samoa, or the address below. For more information, contact ATRC at (808) 532-7110.

Visit the New AT Zone

Thanks to members of the Rotary Club of Honolulu, ATRC unveiled it's new AT Zone at our annual Open House, held on Thursday, September 24th.  The AT Zone, formerly the AT computer lab, is a community where people can interact with other AT users, learn about new devices and software, and explore the multiple facets of AT.

Members of the Rotary Club of Honolulu volunteered their time to transform the room by repainting the walls and enlisted artist John Sanders, son of Rotarian Ken Sanders, to replicate the new AT Zone logo onto the wall.

At the Open House, staff and volunteers showcased recent trends in AT, such as the Tobii eye gaze communication, Amazon Kindle, K-Reader PC educational software, and Windows 7 Accessibility features.  If you didn't have an opportunity to test our AT devices, talk with vendors or interact with other AT users, call us to visit the new AT Zone.

On behalf of ATRC Staff and Board of Directors, we'd like to thank Hawaiian Islands Medical, Island Skill Gatherers and PacMed for participating in our Open House.

Children and Youth Day at the State Capital Offers Children an Opportunity to Learn

Hundreds of children had an opportunity
to learn and play with assistive technology at ATRC's booth at Children and Youth Day 2009 held at the State Capitol on Sunday, October 3rd.

  Children Playing Grabber Game

A new game, "Grab and Stack", was played at this year's event. Parent(s) and their children were given reachers to stack and unstack cups. Children of all ages along with teens and adults enjoyed this interactive and fun activity. Other games included adaptive toys and voice activated and time sequence computer software programs.
