Aliso Viejo's top deputy feted

Orange County Sheriff's Department Deputy Jack Songer was named Aliso Viejo's Deputy of the Year.

A 20-year sheriff's veteran, Songer has served Aliso Viejo since September 2008. He works as a field training officer for newly assigned patrol deputies and is a member of the Sheriff's Department Critical Incident Response Team.

Songer has also worked in custody, South Operations and North Operations as part of the Orange County Transit Authority.

In 2001, he received the department's Medal of Lifesaving for his role in saving a woman from a burning car in Rancho Santa Margarita.

On Dec. 2, Songer was honored by his peers and Lt. Bob Osborne, Chief of Aliso Viejo Police Services, for his dedication to the department and serving the City of Aliso Viejo.

Before joining the Sheriff's Department, Songer was a member of the United States Marine Corps. In his free time, the deputy enjoys spending time with Diana, his wife of 21 years, and their two children.

Book Fair through Friday

If you buy a book as part of Canyon Vista Elementary School's book fair between 9 and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, you'll get a free bagel, school officials said.

The book fair, which runs through Dec. 11, is from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

Money raised at the book fair will help add books to the school's library collection for kindergarten through 5th grade students.

In addition, with Scholastic's One for Books program, all monetary donations will benefit the Canyon Vista Library, and Scholastic will match the donations by providing books to charities, such as Toys for Tots.

The school is located at 27800 Oak View Drive.
