City of Aliso Viejo
Aliso Viejo's citizens, senior and youth of year to be announced Aug. 14

The City Council on Wednesday gave the green light for the City's top residents of the year to be announced on Aug. 14. Mayor Donald Garcia will honor the recipients of the awards during his "State of the City" breakfast at the Aliso Viejo Conference Center.

This is the third year Aliso Viejo, which celebrated its 8th anniversary on July 1, will honor its top citizens of the year. The City Council adopted a policy for the program in 2006, which details the selection process and criteria for selecting a top citizen, youth and senior of the year. The program was created to recognize individuals in the community who have shown outstanding commitment to quality of life in Aliso Viejo.

This year, the City will honor two citizens, one youth and one senior of the year during the State of the City address, which is from 7:15 to 9 a.m. at the City's new Conference Center, located at 31 Santa Barbara. The new City facility is conveniently located off Golf Drive and Glenwood next to the golf course.

Little league team recognized Wednesday, City hosts tournament through Aug. 11

The City Council on Wednesday honored the 2009 Aliso Viejo Little League (AVLL) 9/10-year-old All Star team for winning the District 55 All-Star Tournament.

The All Star team captured the District 55 double-elimination tournament in dramatic style. It began the summer tournament by winning its first three games, defeating the 9/10 year-old All Star teams from Laguna Hills, Newport Beach and Irvine Northwest.

Though they lost their next game by one run to a tough Rancho Niguel team, the players came back with a vengeance to capture the District 55 All Star tournament championship by winning the last three games in three consecutive days.

The All Stars, which scored the winning run in the last inning, won the championship game, 9-8 over Rancho Niguel. Throughout the tournament, the team posted six victories against one loss and averaged nearly 11 runs a game.

In other little league news, Aliso Viejo is the host city for the 2009 Little League Junior Western Region Tournament that runs through Aug. 11.

The tournament, which kicked off on Tuesday, includes state champions from throughout the Western U.S. competing in a series of games held at Woodfield Park and Aliso Niguel High School.
