New speed limit in place on Golf Drive to keep public safe

Motorists driving along a stretch of Golf Drive will have to reduce their speeds, under a plan to improve public safety the City Council approved on Wednesday.
The council adopted an urgency ordinance establishing a 25-mph speed limit on the City-owned street from Glenwood to Santa Barbara Drive. The move stems from public safety concerns expressed by residents over motorists speeding on the two-lane street, which traverses the new Glenwood residential development and leads to the Aliso Viejo Country Club and the City's new Aquatic and Conference centers.
Right now, the street has a posted 15-mph speed limit by the developer, but it's not enforceable. Under the California Vehicle Code, Golf Drive is considered a "highway" with a maximum 55-mph speed limit, despite its proximity to a residential community. Under California law, residential streets are limited to 25 mph.
Public safety is a top priority to the City and City Council, which asked staff to conduct follow up traffic studies to ensure that drivers are following the posted speed limit to keep the community safe. The new speed limit took effect immediately following the City Council's action.
