Council approves new waste disposal agreement with county

The City Council on Wednesday approved a new 10-year waste disposal agreement with the County of Orange to fulfill City waste disposal needs.

The new rate, which equates to about a dollar more per month for residential customers, is the first contract disposal rate increase in 13 years and is still significantly less than other county landfill tipping fees. The proposed $29.95 per ton rate is nearly half the $58 per ton rate charged in neighboring San Diego County and is considerably less than the $37.62 fee paid in LA County. Residents in Riverside County pay $34.33 per ton for the disposal of solid waste.

The term is from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2020. The new rate will be adjusted by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) annually after that.

The new agreement, which was negotiated by OC Waste & Recycling and the Waste Management Committee of the Orange County City Manager's Association, was approved by the County Board of Supervisors in March.

The current $22 rate per ton stays in place until the new rate takes effect on July 1, 2010.
