Aliso Viejo pays homage to fallen peace officers
|
Officers killed in the line of duty last year will be honored by peace officers, survivors, family members and friends during Peace Officers' Memorial Month.
The annual May remembrance pays homage to those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep their communities safe.
A candlelight vigil will be held at 8:30 p.m. tonight to honor fallen officers throughout the state during the California Peace Officers Memorial in Sacramento. Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens will join law enforcement personnel at a formal ceremony on Friday, May 8 where the names of 10 officers killed in the line of duty in 2008 will be added to the memorial. Aliso Viejo Deputy Carlos Barcelos rode his personal motorcycle to Sacramento for the ceremony.
Barcelos will then join peace officers from around the county at the Orange County Peace Officers' Memorial on May 19 for an 8 p.m. candlelight vigil and an 11 a.m. special ceremony May 20 in honor of the 48 peace officers who died in the line of duty in past years.
The ceremony is at the Plaza of the Flags in the Santa Ana Civic Center.

Council approves $10K for local organizations
|
The City Council on Wednesday approved $10,000 in funding for local organizations as part of the City's Community Assistance Grant Funding Program. The City contributes funding each year for selected community service programs and activities by non-profit or civic organizations that provide valuable services to the community. The competitive Community Assistance Grant Funding Program was established in 2002. Funding is awarded to applicants that meet program guidelines and offer the community a direct benefit from the services they provide. The funding will be awarded in July as part of the City's 2009/10 budget. In other budget-related news, council members delayed taking action on the City's draft budget pending additional information about the Sheriff's contract. The City Council meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of the month in Council Chambers at City Hall. For more information, visit the City's Web site at www.cityofalisoviejo.com.
