Summertime, and the Art is Amazing!

Greetings!

BAA continues to offer its members and its patrons a growing number of exhibits and special events. Our monthly "Saturday Exhibit Suites" highlight two member artists for a one-day show. And our "By the Sea" Event at the Harbor Village coming up on September 11 will feature hands-on art experiences, exhibits, music and refreshments for all ages, co-sponsored by a variety of the area's non-profit service agencies. Plus, of course, our monthly solo and member exhibits!

There's always something new to see, and several venues to explore -- Buenaventura Gallery, Harbor Village Gallery, and Community Memorial Hospital. For more information please visit our website at buenaventuragallery.org.

Ms. Burks' show is a series of paintings based on photos she has taken of window displays in Downtown Ventura. It's an alternative view of Ventura; instead of landscapes and street scenes, she zooms in on details that catch her eye. Downtown Ventura has it all - antique stores, thrift shops, bars, cafes, jewelry stores, clothing stores - and what you find inside them runs the gamut from kitschy to trendy, from modern to memory lane. Susan Guy's work reflects external explorations in the natural world as well as internal explorations of self. The surrounding natural environment inspires the artist to express her appreciation of it freely in her oils and watercolors. Working the more controlled medium of kiln fired paint on glass helps turn her attention inwards to emotions abstractly.

Parker's wood tablets combine his love of wood, language, nature, mystery and wonder. The individual pieces are intended as glimpses out of the corner of the eye - fragments of perceptions on fragments of wood. BJ Fan's remarkable 3D compositions of folded and swirling paper reveal the whimsical nature of a variety of creatures, including cats and birds. (more)

Featured Artisan: Barbara Hinton

Explore the world of fiber artistry with Barbara Hinton. Barbara's needle felting technique involves using a barbed needle to sculpt fibers into shapes, or to adhere fibers to a surface. Using a needle-felting machine, the artist can "draw" with fiber and create realistic images or embellish and layer fibers and fabrics to create unique designs. Barbara loves the freedom of this art form and plans to continue to explore the medium.
