July's Buzzing with Art Events & Shows
Greetings!

July is a-buzz with local artists on exhibit all over town. Along with the stellar work being shown in our own galleries, we are celebrating the birth of the Westside ArtWalk, an all-volunteer revival of the former city-funded event. Come enjoy the summer breezes, brilliant color and exuberant spirit of our many talented local artists.

There's always something new to see, and several venues to explore -- Buenaventura Gallery, Harbor Village Gallery, and Community Memorial Hospital.  For more information please visit our website at buenaventuragallery.org.

"Journey"

Friday, July 1, 5-8pm

JOUR-NEY [jurnee] (noun): 1.  trip somewhere; 2.  process of development, "a spiritual journey".

The inspiration for Brown's new work is a story, brought to life in a limited edition art book, and written by her. It describes a scene that typifies human journeys. According to Brown, "I am enticed to convey in images my dreams and life journeys. I use printmaking in all its forms to illustrate and explore these scenes." Brown is known for the simplicity and depth in the fine art printmaking she creates. In this collection she includes narrative factors with symbolism connecting the imagined or real paths we take on our journeys. This is her second solo show with Buenaventura Art Association.

Downtown Ventura"

Reception:

Saturday, July 23 - 4-7 pm

First Fridays Ventura Gallery Crawl:

Friday, August 5, 5-8pm

Ms. Burks' show is a series of paintings based on photos she has taken of window displays in Downtown Ventura. It's an alternative view of Ventura; instead of landscapes and street scenes, she zooms in on details that catch her eye. Downtown Ventura has it all - antique stores, thrift shops, bars, cafes, jewelry stores, clothing stores - and what you find inside them runs the gamut from kitschy to trendy, from modern to memory lane. It's changing all the time. A few of the shops she's used as the subject for a painting have already closed or are closing soon.  Some of these paintings have a nostalgic feeling, some a sense of mystery, some even have a little humor. Whatever it is that draws her to the photo, it has to set the stage for something more.

"Cowgirls, Horses & Landscapes ... Oh My!"

June 29 - August 8, 2011

Artists' Reception: Friday, July 8, 5 - 8 pm

The philosophy for the Dual Show was to combine Nancy's interest in women, horses, and Native Americans with Kitty's studies of western landscapes and to share them with friends old and new for their enjoyment. Kitty feels amazed, nourished and rebalanced after walking with her camera in these landscapes and hopes to share those feelings with her photographs. Nancy uses humor and whimsical images to remind viewers of people they know and how the art work relates to them, hopefully putting a smile on their faces.
