Gallery Hosting & You
We Love our Volunteers! But No-Shows are Everyone's Problem
Gallery hosting at the both galleries is a very important job and we appreciate all our volunteers for taking on this job. We've had a few occurrences lately when we didn't have volunteer host coverage and the gallery ended up being closed. Or, once in a while two people have shown up for the same gallery hosting time at the same gallery.
To have the best gallery hosting coverage and experience, here are some things to remember when you sign up to be a gallery host:
*Make a note of the day, time and gallery you will be hosting and confirm in advance. If you forget and miss coming in that means the gallery will be closed or someone else will have to pinch-hit hosting. Call or email the gallery a week or so before you're scheduled to confirm your date, time and location in advance.
*Call the Gallery if there is a Problem: If you are scheduled and something comes up, call the gallery you are hosting at right away so we can put a call out for a new host.
*Respond ASAP: When emails are sent from the gallery asking for hosts, please call or email as soon as you can to let us know you can fill that position.
*Keeping the gallery open is very important. Gallery hosts maintain our gallery hours the majority of the time. Emily, Regina and Kitty have many duties they perform for us, and cannot be expected to cover the galleries if there is a gap.
Allowing people access to see (and purchase) the work of our wonderful artists is what we are all about!

CSUCI Senior Project in Art
|
Student Seeks Art Donations
Korinne McKinley won a student membership at one of last year's shows. She is a student at CSUCI and doing her senior project called Art Capstone this semester. Her group is collecting artwork to donate to people who would like art but cannot afford to buy it. They are working with a local Pastor to help find recipients for this project, but what they really need are more art donations. Korinne says: "We're taking all kinds of art including, paintings, sculptures, drawings, or what-have-you. When we receive the art, we're also going to photograph it and put it on a special flickr page for our recipients to browse. They will then choose the pieces they want from this gallery." Donations accepted now thru early December. Email her at korinne.mckinley239@myci.csuci.edu. Donations can be picked up upon request or dropped off at 2344 Foster Ave, Ventura, Ca 93001.

Notes on the Season

WHAT IS A GOURD?
Gourds are part of the plant family cucurbicaceae, same as the pumpkin family. Planting seeds is done in February or March and gourds are left on the vine for as long as a year to dry completely, less time where frost occurs and they are picked to dry indoors. They thrive in Mexico, Cuba, Japan, Southern U.S. and California. Evidence of gourds has been found on nearly every continent dating back 10,000 years. Humans have been using gourds for many different purposes for thousands years; domestic, ceremonial, ritual purposes, decorative, food source, fishing floats, rafts, pipes, snuffboxes and utilitarian. In the past they have been crushed and used as pesticides in gardens, used extensively in folk medicines in cultures around the world to treat burns, gout, dysentery, etc. Gourds were commonly eaten by Native-American Indians, Middle Eastern people and Hawaiians. Chinese make a drink similar to sweet tea. Asians use the waxy white coating to make candles. Gourds have been and are currently used to make musical instruments such as drums, stringed instruments and many others. In recent years, the luffa gourd is popular as a bath sponge. And last, but not least, the Channel Island Gourd Society members use gourds to create gourd art, like the ones found at the Artisan Store in the Harbor Village Gallery. | Greetings! |
 Cheers to Change and Challenges!
Over the last few years with BAA I have heard a few comments about themed exhibits and it always baffles me that as an artist, you wouldn't try and step outside our comfort level and try something new. I understand working in a new medium might be a challenge, but isn't that what we as artists are known for? Changing the rules to fit our own definition, we are the creative ones! I have to admit having two open competitions with restrictions at both of our Galleries might have been a scheduling challenge with some of you feeling "you couldn't participate" and I apologize, but honestly, it will most likely happen again at some point in the months and years to come. I encourage you to give it a try. When we experiment we learn a lot. I heard a few artists tried a new medium at our last BAA workshop, which turned out to be (dare I say it) FUN! The titles of the CMH shows are suggestions for you to run with... take your inspired artworks and challenge yourself to submit something to "fit" those parameters. Change the title or simply examine how many different interpretations of the title there can be. At the CMH shows the large amount of art works needed to fill the hallways lend to a vast amount of pieces needed, so send in your submissions! It's FREE and literally thousands of viewers observe, appreciate and some even BUY the artwork! While talking with Gail Pidduck, our solo artists for November at the Buenaventura Gallery, she spoke to me about her "different' subject matter and all I could think was "what a thrill!" Something new to dive into and admire - I can't wait to see it. At the Harbor Village Gallery, Dorothea Heger has just installed a show that she incorporated inspirational poetry, again, something new to shake up the studio dust. I love it! So cheers to change and challenges! Look in a different light at what might inspire you. Go visit the new Ventura Art Museum, take a drive to an exhibiting space you've never been to. With ArtWalk coming up, the abundance of artists around town can provide numerous levels of inspiration. Have fun and happy creating ~ Emily Thompson, Executive Director of BAA
