Juror Profiles
|
"Go Figure" Juror Richard Franklin
The juror for "Go Figure: A Celebration of the Human Body" will be Richard Franklin, a figurative
artist, ceramist, instructor, and architect. He has had a life-long love of
drawing, as well as making three-dimensional work in ceramics and
sculpture. Extensive travel stimulates his imagination. He was
associated with the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia
from 1980 to 1998 and showed regularly in their galleries. He has also shown in the Ojai Center for the Arts, Ojai Cafe Emporium,
Ojai Valley HIstorical Society & Museum, Ventura County Museum of
History & Art Visitor's Center, Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts,
Ventura County Government Center, and was the featured artist at Focus
on the Masters in 2005. His work has received numerous awards and most
recently at the Ventura County Fair Professional Arts exhibit. John White: Member Show on July 19 at BVG
John White's work was seminal to the development of performance art
in California until his retirement in 1986 to focus on his paintings
and drawings. He
is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Grants, the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art New Talent Award in 1971, CETA Grant and
Djerassi Fellowship. His paintings and drawings are represented in
several permanent museum collections. He has emerged from his
performance art retirement only twice in the past 20 years. In 1989, he
was commissioned by the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department
and
in 1995 he was invited to do a piece at the Cleveland Institute of
Art's Performance Art Festival .
Johanna Spinks: Member Show at HVG, October 12
Award-winning Los Angeles portrait artist Johanna Spinks knows faces inside out. For years
she worked as a top Hollywood makeup artist to the stars. Over the years she became increasingly frustrated by the demands of the business and decided
to devote herself full-time to her love of classical portraiture - still painting the
face, but from now on exclusively in oil on canvas. "Years of applying makeup to all types of faces have given me a solid grasp of the facial
form," says Johanna. Her work was
featured recently in the New York Times. She has earned awards
and show acceptances from American Artist Magazine,
Art Talk, Oil Painters of America and The California Art Club.
Johanna's affiliations also include Allied Artists of America, Artists Fellowship of New
York, Players' Club of New York, National Arts Club, Portrait Society of America
(Johanna was proud to serve as its California State Ambassador for three years), and Portrait
Society of Atlanta.

Greetings! |
Pirates and Music and Art, Oh My!
Ahh
the May (June and early-July) Gray has finally evaporated! The sunshine has returned as has our new
member year. The wheels of BAA keep turning and new ideas pop-up around every
corner, like the great figure drawing workshop last weekend with Susan Seaberry. If
you have any interest in polishing some figurative skills for the upcoming "Go Figure" show at the HVG in the Fall, then I would highly
recommend attending the second half of this great workshop! There's also a concert at the Buenaventura Gallery this
Thursday! Live music and art... what could be better! Then if you've
shined up your eye patch, don't forget to stop by the Ventura Haaarrrrbor this
coming weekend for some scallywaggin' with annual Pirate Days. Friday
night is David Orias's opening reception and, if you're up for it, a pub
crawl around the Harbor! Wow - that is just this week. On a business
note: Please remember there is a Gallery Hosting Orientation on July 25 at the HVG that will benefit all. Even if you have hosted before, I
know you can learn how to make yourself more comfortable by knowing
where to find the answers. Can't wait to see all the new shows going
up, members and solo artists! See you at the Galleries!

SPECIAL NOTE:
HVG extended summer hours on Fri-Sun, 11-6. "Reflecting on Waves"
Photographs by David Orias
July 14 - August 8, 2010
Artist's Reception: Friday, July 16 · 5-8 pm
Southern California's
waves are shown in their spectacular beauty through David Orias's lens.
"Water is colorless, yet it can take on the colors of the light that is
shown through it or reflected upon it." Orias's photographs display the
complex beauty of waves and their colors, shades, and reflections with
a harmonic touch of photographic mastery. He chooses to photograph at
dawn, capturing warm comforting colors; while using a slow shutter
speed and camera motion, adding a unique and soft touch to his work.
His photographs reveal waves in a full range of colors from oranges,
reds, blues, turquoises, and more; reflections of the dawn, California's fires, and other atmospheric wonders. Click here for more. Coming Soon ... Mary-Jo Murphy
"Whimsical Wags...
Where Art Meets Bark"August 11 - September 5, 2010Pet-Friendly Artist's Reception: Friday, August 13, 5 - 8 pmMary-Jo Murphy's work is
simply fun and catchy, bringing smiles and laughter to animal and art admirers.
Her subjects are "man's best friends" including; dogs, cats and other animals
rendered in a range of colors, full of energy and love. Her work expresses the
bond between beloved pets and humans. Looking into the eyes of our pets we feel
their compassion and joy. Murphy states, "Their wisdom remains unspoken but not
un-communicated." Reminiscent of pop art with an iconic appeal, Murphy's work
is composed with fun, solid-color backgrounds and close-ups of the beloved animal's
smiling face. Think Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe, but with funky animals as the
star of the show! This exhibit joyfully presents Murphy's bold work in
acrylics, watercolors, and digital ink-resist. (Click here for more info.)Special Events at the Harbor Village Gallery ... PET PORTRAITS Linda Cowell and Pam Salem are available to do portraits of your pet(s) at the Harbor Village Gallery. Please click here for more info. KIDS CREATIONS: FREE! At the Buenaventura Gallery
| Susan Seaberry
"Innocence and Experience:
The Figure in Art"
June 22 -July 17, 2010
Part independent rebel with intuitive talent and part designer with
tendencies towards fashionista, Seaberry delivers her figures as
characters from fabled tales whose human qualities relate to us as
effortlessly as our own reflection. Colorful, whimsical and poised with
drama or intrigue, the subjects express strength and individuality, two
values Seaberry honors and executes with grace. (Click here for more info)
Stellamara
Trio at the Buenaventura Gallery Thursday July 15, 7-9
pm
Performing an intimate concert in celebration of Susan Seaberry's fine art
exhibit. Stellamara
is an internationally acclaimed world music ensemble based in the San Francisco
Bay Area. The
music includes original and traditional folk songs from the Balkans, the Near
East and America's roots. Stellamara's Sonja Drakulich is Susan Seaberry's
daughter. ( stellamara.com) Coming Soon ...Darlene Dewing: "Favorite Places"
July 20 - August 14, 2010 Artist reception: Saturday, July 24. 4-7 pm. Also: Meet Darlene at First Fridays Ventura Gallery Crawl August 6, 5-8 pm.
The landscapes Darlene Dewing creates in pastels are more like nature
portraits. She gathers information on the soul of a place and transfers
its likeness to paper with buttery colors which volley between the
definition of painting and drawing. This spirit is the moment Dewing
hunts for. The sun haloing a tree like a saint, the sparkle of light on
the water or the blanket of color Mother Nature lays down in the
springtime; these are Dewing moments. (Click here for more info) |
