Greetings! | Lots of Blooming and Growing: Cross-pollination in "New Art City"
I grew up back East chanting this time of year... "April showers bring May flowers", but here in southern California, we don't have to wait until May to enjoy the blooming colors of spring! We have these colors all year round, but what spring has brought to BAA is the blooming prospects of art sales! I have seen an increase at both galleries in the last month as well as at CMH. The outside-the-box thinking of Gerald Zwers's wild "One Man Art Contest" combines efforts with other non-profits, as will Ron Zolkover during his HVG show in May. BAA art spaces are becoming visible by more first-time visitors then ever before - more visitors and more buyers! The last CMH opening featured a violinist from the Ventura Music Festival, another bright blooming idea bringing awareness to all the great collaboration we love at BAA. Big proud pats on the back to the award winners mentioned in the Members Shinesection of our newsletter! Oh the talent! Congrats to the great new members of BAA who have joined us for the next year, from the student competition. We are very happy to have these fresh and innovative new artists who have already started to enter their work into our Member Shows. Speaking of young artists, stop by the Ventura City Corps building (77 California St) on Saturday of ArtWalk to see the results of this year's KidzSnap program - an ArtsLIVE grant program brought to fruition by the talented trio of Erin Mason, Linda Peterson and Lisa Dodge. Thank you three sooooo much for helping to share the great wonders of photography with these budding young artists. As we are wrapping up this member year I remind you to check your volunteer hours if you are an Exhibiting Member, to mark June 12 in your calendar for our Annual Member Meeting and Pot Luck and to think about joining the board. Maybe your great ideas should be brought to the table to help make BAA better then it already is. Thank you and see you at the Galleries! ~Emily Thompson, Executive Director, BAA |
BAA Board and Officer Elections for 2010-11
|
Become a Guiding Member of BAA! Board Elections and Annual Meeting: Saturday, June 12
In May, the BAA Board will begin accepting nominations for
board membership and officer positions. The BAA board is a dynamic and
proactive group who has taken on BAA's challenges with energy and enthusiasm,
including hiring our new Executive Director, Emily Thompson. Our art
association has undergone many changes in the last few years. We have expanded
our gallery space to include the Harbor Village Gallery and Community Memorial
Hospital, giving our members even more opportunities to show their work. We
have further solidified our place in the Ventura arts community with our
Student Art Competition and scholarship awards and through interaction with
other established community organizations.
You can become a guiding member of our association by
adding your name to those nominated for the BAA board, or as an officer.
Elections will be in June, and ballots will be sent to members at least 30 days
prior to the June 12 annual meeting.
Thanks to all our current and previous board members and
officers for their service to BAA and its membership. We're one of the oldest

"By Land and By Sea"
Phyllis
Solcyk March 31
- May 9, 2010Artist Reception: Friday, April 9,
2010, 5-8 pm.
Phyllis Solcyk's fine paintings offer soft and
attentive details with an exquisite glow of mastery. Her realistic compositions
include pristine Tall Ships, Coast Guard Cutters, Tugs, Fishing Boats and
Seascapes. Each painting pulls you in for a closer look, revealing carefully
crafted details. Solcyk began her art education at the Chouinard Art
Institute on scholarship. Shortly after she began work with Disney Studios!
Thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Disney she assisted on the films
"Lady and the Tramp" and "Sleeping Beauty" among other projects. After Disney
she began illustrating for the Aerospace Industry, and her interests turned to
science and space. (Click here for more info).Ron Zolkover
"Golden Days and Starry Nights"
May 12 - June 13, 2010 Artist's Reception: Saturday, May 15, 2010 5 - 8 pm
"I just returned from a beautiful December Sunday morning painting session in La Jolla Canyon,
Point Mugu. The day was crisp and sunny. Yesterday was dreary and
rainy, but I never mind the wet days...Spring is around the corner.
Sounds very optimistic in these days of economic melt down and H1N1. I
am a native Californian. Although, I am not pleased at the over
population and development, there are still many places you can find
the unspoiled beauty of our state. My paintings reflect my impressions
of my surroundings. Most of my paintings are done plein air and are
spontaneous and true to the moment. If you look closely some contain
plant and insect remnants. The larger works are done primarily in the
studio where I can focus on the color and composition without changing
light and climate." Click here for more info. |

Pedro de la Cruz "She is So Strong Willed" April 27 to May 22, 2010 Opening reception: Saturday, May 1, 4-7 pm
"She is so Strong Willed" is an exhibit of color and
confidence. The recent works de la Cruz is homage to women of courage and
strength. His canvas, proudly adorned with bold and beautiful women, have
modern angles and feminine curves. From powerful to passionate, de la Cruz's subjects flirt,
seduce and cajole with their postmodern compositions, intelligence and grace.
The artist has a defiant disregard for standard rules of painting. A bohemian
dogma which when paired with his talent for addressing various viewpoints in
two dimensions, give de la Cruz a freedom to express the unique beauty of his
muse. Click here for more info. |
