Studio Tour and Talk

Bob Privitt, Mentor
to Many
Artist Talk & Studio Tour Thursday,
March 25th 10:30 until noon
This studio tour and artist talk is open to 10
guests $25 per members $30 for nonmembers Students free. Bob is a BAA member and professor emeritus at Pepperdine University where he taught art for many years. In Bob's Words: Perceptions: Contradictions and Associations- I'm interested in the
juxtaposition of disparate elements to create new meaning. I have long been
intrigued by images and shapes which seem to have simple and obvious meanings,
but upon further examination prove to have multiple and even contradictory
meanings. Utilizing some of the conceptual methods of Dada and Surrealism I
have tried to examine the psychological balance between that which is
"reasonable" and that which is "irrational." I do not
consider myself a Dada or Surrealist artist. I am merely an observer of
"THE HUMAN CONDITION" with its myths, dreams, future hopes, flights
to freedom, and the balance between positive events and negative actions. My
artwork is the result of those observations. Contact SCIART for reservations. 805-383-1368

March Featured Artisan:
Debi Nowak-HawkesJewelry Design and Portraiture
Debi Nowak-Hawkes is a fine artist specializing in portraits and pearl jewelry. Her "passion for freshwater pearls" has led her to make one of a kind bracelets and earrings. No two are alike. "I look at each pearl for its unique qualities and potential, much like a sculptor looks at a stone they are about to carve." Debi's portrait work is done primarily in charcoal and oil, and she has the ability to capture a likeness and personality in her portraits. Debi happily accepts commissions for her portraits and pearl jewelry. Drop by the Harbor Gallery in March and you just might catch her doing portraits in the gallery. She will also meet there by appointment. Email her at debi@dn-h.com.April's featured artisan: Mary Gail King

| Greetings! |
Lots to Buzz About
Another Month has whizzed by, well that's what happens when you're having fun right! This month brings many events to BAA! Hope you have the BAA Events Calendar printed out and taped to your fridge so you don't miss anything! First off there is the enthusiastic student work at the Harbor Village Gallery. Go check out the emerging artists' wild and new creative endeavors! Thanks to the sales of the Two Trees Calendars and to a generous donation from the Jessica & Stanley Prescott Endowment Fund for the Arts we will be awarding $4,000 in scholarships to Ventura County college art students, as well as gift certificates to the local art supply store and Supporting Members of BAA, VENTURA CREATES! Next is the New Beginnings exhibit at CMH. Six hours and over 200 pieces in and out of the hospital's lobby last Sunday! There is no "i" in "team", folks, thank you team CMH! The "Meet the Artist Reception" will not only be a great way for the artists to meet their potential new collectors, but there will also be a violinist to enjoy from the Ventura Music Festival! Aahh I love mingling the arts... Speaking of VMF! What buzz from the Treasure Chests, if y'all haven't heard yet, our one and only Janet Black's treasure chest was auctioned off for $5,000! Ten of the 15 participating artists were BAA members ... again, I love our mingling arts village. Congrats to all the artists, the treasure chests were VERY impressive! Okay, back to BAA events: The SIDECAR RESTAURANT! Hope you can come and enjoy this wonderful event at one of my favorite restaurants in Ventura. This is a great win/win fundraising event for us and a guaranteed busy night for Chef Tim. If you know a restaurant that would be interested in a similar event, let me know. I would LOVE to do this again! The Silent Auction items are not to be missed, stay tuned for artist names and a few sneak peeks! See you at the gallery... or the hospital or the Sidecar!

Helle Scharling-Todd
"New Work: Figures and Spaces" March 2-27, 2010
Figures and Spaces is a collection of episodes, as Sharling-Todd
titles them, depicting moments of human interaction -- Inspired by
observing people and the drama they create among themselves by simply
by being alive. "To observe humans and their activities never ceases to
amaze me, and to create little dramas between a group of figures is
fascinating," explains Sharling-Todd. By isolating the activity of a
single individual, the fallen figure or the helping hand,
Sharling-Todd's linear compositions tell a story of expression and
relationship. The colorful frozen narratives portrayed in glass and
steel have a historical quality to them, like a psychological thesis.
The theories and results of these "episodes" have been visually
preserved for posterity. (Click here for more info.) Coming soon ...
