"Jungle In your Living Room" Pastels by Pamela Salem
Pamela Salem has an intrinsic passion for capturing animal's strength and beauty, which shines through her soft images in pastels. Her realistic renderings show more than that of a photograph; instead they delve into the expression of the stunning mysteries of the power and wonder of wild mammals. With her soft pastel strokes it is as if you can feel the artist softly caressing and creating these animals' portraits right in front your eyes, in the jungle. Her motherly instincts reveal themselves in these soft touches in her work. One can truly enjoy the wild, full of awe-striking animals, right here in this exhibit. |

Humble Apologies
|
The editor of the BAA newsletter apologizes to member Bob Privitt for omitting his recent solo exhibit from our listing. His show, entitled "Viewpoints: Existence and the Human Condition", was held in the New Media Gallery at Ventura College, Oct. 8 - Nov. 5, 2009. |
Framing Tips for the Gallery
|
For the most part the framing of
artwork by our members is excellent! But we note some troublesome exceptions.
Incorrect placement of wiring creates problems that have to be fixed by the
hanging crew, taking up their valuable volunteer time. The correct placement for the
eyehook on a frame is 1/3 the way down from the top of the frame. So if the
outside vertical measurement of the frame is 24" then divide 24 by 3, and place the eyehook 8" from the top of the frame (see image). That way there is plenty of
room to string the wire and still give a minimum of 2 inches from the top of
the frame to the wire. So the rule
is: Eyehooks 1/3 down and wire 2" min. from top.
Following this guideline will ensure that artwork is
flush to the wall, and that the hanging hooks behind the piece do not show. Thanks -- Jan
Faulkner and the Installation Crew

| Downtown Gallery's Outdoor Sculpture Revitalized |
Marilyn Cahill and Jack Halbert restored the sculpture which is mounted on the front wall of the Buenaventura Gallery, at 700 Santa Clara Street for several years. "Red/Green Dyad I with Orange" was dedicated in 1995 and was a gift of the artist, Bill McEwen. McEwen has been a BAA member since 1969. Bill is known for his experimental 3-dimensional art objects based on observations of relationships to time and space in nature. Bill is a pharmacist-turned-artist whose work reflects a rigorous intellectual curiosity. He employs stainless steel and bronze and, at times, hand-pigmented plastic. He will be featured in the Tuesday Talk for Focus on the Masters on December |

| Greetings! |
Art's-a-poppin' at BAA!
What a weekend! What talent we exude! First was the Watercolor and Aquamedia opening reception. The artwork speaks for itself, a whole gallery of winning pieces! What a joyous merger to have CGCWS and BAA as one. This soon to be annual competition will be one for collectors to swoon over. A special thank you Dorothy Brunkan for hours of assistance. Then on Saturday our gallery was packed with Robert Wassell fans stepping back for a better view of his vistas or stepping closer for a better view of this years first Small Image Show (the second Small Image Show at HVG opens on Dec 15). Time to spread the word about enlarging your own art collections, these pieces are priced right for the holiday season. Speaking of gifts, the 2010 Two Trees Calendar is back from the press and will be ready for purchase before you pre-heat the oven for your Thanksgiving Feast. Our 12 selected Two Trees Artists have provided unique images of our local landmark to experience throughout the year. Everyone's neighbor, uncle and second cousin twice removed should have one by the time 2010 rings in! Remember, sales of the calendar help to raise money for the Student Scholarship Awards.
Finally, how thankful am I for another great assistant! I welcome Christy Smolenski to our team (at right). She is an energetic young artist who is thrilled to be a part of our great organization. Next time you stop by the Harbor Village Gallery, introduce yourself, she has many great members to meet. Keep creating and see you at the Gallery!
