Linda Cowell at the Discovery Gallery

Cowell art image
The bold, beautiful, eye catching images of Linda Cowell's "Life and Earth" might cause a double take, but it's worth the second look. Cowell's realistic creations, in a variety of media, range from acrylic airbrushed animals on nontraditional surfaces to classic and poetic colored pencil drawings. Cowell's interest in contrast and color give her an edge of super-realism. Local scenes, still life, and nature studies are expressions of shape, contour and texture - aspects of composition that are most intriguing to Cowell.
October 2 thru Nov. 4, Discovery Gallery. Reception Friday, Oct 2, 5-8 pm, during First Friday Gallery Crawl.

Julieanne Case Featured at the Harbor's Artisan Store

JCase 09-23-09
Julieanne Case began painting and dancing at a very young age. However, when family circumstances changed the painting stopped, and she redirected her creative impulses into learning to cook under her mother's tutelage.
"My natural talent for cooking was fed by experimentation and exploration. My dining room table was my palette for many years where I created an edible sensory 'painting' - using the table setting and the food to nourish the person and their soul through sight, smell and taste." Dancing has also remained as a life-long pleasure and pasttime.
After college, Julieanne took a figure drawing class and reawakened her love for art, surprising herself with her skill at capturing the model before her. Then the art door swung closed again until nine years ago when a painting class seemed to be calling her name and she listened. As with cooking, painting seemed to come naturally to her, especially mixing and using color which she describes as "pure joy". She says: "Why did I take that class? Maybe the Universe was calling me. But I'm filled with awe and love when I paint and those emotions are in my paintings along with pure unbridled joy!"
At times Julieanne paints with a technique called Ho'oponopono which is a clearing and healing technique. She says: "I would love to heal the world with my paintings. And I'm hoping this comes through in my paintings. Enjoy! Life is to be savored either through taste, feel, smell, visual or sound! Take your pick. I love them all! How about you?"
Julieanne Case works in three mediums: oils, digital fine art and photography.

We're also happy to announce this year's 3D Open Competition and Kinetic Sculpture Race. For your convenience, many articles contain links to sites offering more in-depth information. To keep you as current as possible with BAA news and activities, we will publish this newsletter every two weeks. Please send suggestions and news items to [email protected].

Christine Beirne Passes the Torch to Emily Thompson as Interim Executive Director
Christine Beirne
Dear members,
Effective in two weeks, I will be resigning as Executive Director of the Buenaventura Art Association. My tenure here has been enjoyable, exciting and inspiring.
About twelve years ago, as an artist-member of BAA, I volunteered to pull together the newsletter every month.  At the time, my kids were still in school, I worked part-time and went to college part time. I laid out the newsletter on my computer at home and printed out the pages on my printer. Dorothy Brunkan would drop off the folder of newsletters items every month (long before email became standard for sending in information) and I in turn, would place the "original" pages in the folder and Dorothy would bring them back to the gallery to copy.  I did the newsletter for six years - through marriages, deaths, holidays and vacations.
At the end of 2002, I started working one day a week as BAA's marketing director under Lee Hodges, the gallery director extraordinaire. Kathy McGuire was also an employee and the three of us put a lot of time, effort and thought into the gallery.
When Lee retired in 2004, I was offered the job as director by the board of directors.  I turned down the job knowing how much time and effort it took to do the job well.  The association hired Tom Mathews in 2005. When Tom left in 2006, I was again asked by the board to accept the position. I agreed with the understanding that I would only hold the job for two years. In my mind, I set a number of goals for the association that I wanted to meet. One was to hold an annual student scholarship competition and the other was to have a completed Strategic Plan.  I've accomplished both!
I hired Emily Thompson a year later with the idea that she would take over for me when I left the association.
It has been three years and I am ready to get back to my studio and create art!  I know I'm leaving the association in great hands with Emily, Regina and our vibrant board of directors. I will be here for two more weeks to assure a smooth running of operations and then you'll find me in Ojai painting away!
Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this association - I still plan to be a member so you'll see me around.  - Chris Beirne

Duain Wood img

Photographer Duain Wood says of his upcoming solo exhibit: "My penchant for remote geographic locations in my photography stems from my love of travel and discovery as well as my passion for geography. I specialize in the capturing on film of wide open spaces, which I admire for what I like to call their 'desolate beauty'. I mean to imply quietness and ruggedness, which is often encountered in remote locations of Sierra Nevada, Death Valley, Mono Lake."
