Featured Artisan of the Month at the Artisan Store, HVG
Debby SuttonDebby Sutton
Growing up in an era, where the formal education of women was considered frivolous, my formal education ended with high school. Fortunately I had acquired excellent observational and reading skills.
My creative skills started when I was eight years old during a bout of chicken pox. I used my crayons to change the color and styles of paper dolls. I made clothes out of rags for my real dolly and "Gidget" our cat. A tiny red toy sewing machine eventually led me to creative dressmaking, drapery making and reupholstering future.
I worked in a number of other occupations where my skills, ability to adapt and curiosity permitted me to excel - a wig stylist, a manicurist, a private investigative assistant and a chiropractic assistant. In the latter case I went to college for the first time and began to take science classes, hoping to train for the chiropractic profession. An economic downturn and some personal challenges derailed that opportunity.
My venture into jewelry making started as a hobby while wintering in Baja. It started with beading and making simple jewelry. This was possible in the confines of or outside of our motor home. A few years ago after an illness, I began to concentrate on making more complex jewelry, using real gemstones, silver and copper wrapping and silver soldering. I took special classes, did a great deal of reading and experimenting plus lots and lots of practice. In all instances my flare for colors, unusual designs, and the use of several media led to the unique pieces that are the hallmark of my jewelry. So what started as some playing as a young girl has evolved into the very creative designs of my art!

Featured Artisan, Janna Valenzuela starting July 15!
Janna V Award-winning local artist Janna Valenzuela will be the Featured Artisan at the Harbor Village Gallery's Artisan Store beginning July 15. When asked about her favorite medium, she says: "I never met a medium I didn't like."

Born in Wyoming, in her teens Janna moved with her family to California and settled in Ojai. Her varied background includes professional costume and clothing design, an avenue she has been pursuing since the age of four. Equally at home in two- and three-dimensional art, she has shown work in many media including quilting, bookmaking, collage, painting, sculpture, mixed media, textile design and a variety of fiber arts. A fellow artist has said: "Her work is always intriguing and thoughtful, often with a secret smile or wink for the conscientious viewer."

Currently emerging from what she terms a "crisis of artistic belief", Janna has recently chosen to focus on the "fun of hands-on": linocuts, applied design on fabric a nd fabric manipulation. As the Harbor Village Gallery's featured artisan she will be showcasing her recent work in block printing, including matted prints and greeting cards.

Janna Valenzuela has enjoyed a life-long involvement with the Ventura arts community. She has studied art at the University of Wyoming, UCSB, Ventura College, and with some of our most prominent local artists, including Gerd Koch, Hiroko Yoshimoto, Ellis Jump and Bernard Dietz. In her own words: "Art is always a process, a discovery and then a connection between the finished product and the viewer. There is always beauty, and beauty somehow connects."
