| Bring-In Coordinator: Have you ever wondered how the bring-in volunteers are found? Who calls them? Who makes sure we have plenty of people to make bring-in as easy as possible? Betty Buckner! However, she has been doing the same job for YEARS and would like someone to take over the position. If this interests you, please email Chris. This is a perfect job for someone who needs to do their volunteer work from home. |

| Gloria Rupio is this month's Featured Artist at the Artisan Store |
|
Before turning her talents to making jewelry, Gloria Rupio experimented with stained glass, pastels and oils. One holiday season, she chose to make beaded jewelry for gifts, and never looked back. Now working in precious metals and semi-precious stones, Gloria's uniquely styled jewelry is popular with her fellow artists. She gets her inspiration from the materials themselves, and her designs showcase the simplicity of the stone shapes, often with an Asian or Native American flavor. In addition to jewelry, Gloria has created a very popular and fun line of handbags exclusively for our galleries. With a focus on re-purposed materials, her unique "newspaper purses" use laminated newsprint and hand-painting to create a one-of-a-kind accessory. Her hand-stitched leather bags are often adorned with semi-precious stones and metalwork. A native Venturan of Phillipine and Spanish descent, Gloria sells her work exclusively through the galleries of the Buenaventura Art Association. She may be contacted at eniemini@charter.net

| Member Show at HVG Jurors Comments |
|
Susan Krieg's Juror Comments for the current HVG Member Show 1. What would be a brief summary of your art background? I did three years of my undergraduate studies as a painting/drawing major at California College of Arts and Crafts and ended up with a BFA in Psychology from Ottawa University. I continued my education in life drawing at the Art Students League in New York and Trompe-l'œil oil painting at Otis. My 20 years as a professional artist includes 4 years of commercial design for Phoenix Art Group and Accent Graphics, ongoing gallery representation for my body of mixed media figurative work, a couple dozen public art mural projects in Los Angeles and as an educator I have taught mixed-media abstract workshops in Montreal and Trompe-l'oeil painting at Learning Tree University. 2. Overall, what did you feel about the quality of work submitted? The overall quality of the work submitted was from good to very good. There was a tremendous amount of vitality in every piece. 3. What was exceptional about the art of the Merit Award winners? I initially narrowed my choice to 14 works, based on obvious craftsmanship, handling of the medium, and something that made the piece stand out as unique or intriguing. I would have been happy to leave it at 14 winners. My final three choices were made by a degree of mastery of refinement, attention to finishing details, and quality of line, surface, and texture. 4. What would you say was your main criteria in jurying this show? First was the initial effect of the piece to attract me. Second was the control of the chosen medium and analysis of detail - craftsmanship. Third was composition, integration and interrelationship of visual elements. 5. Do you have any additional comments regarding the artists or gallery? I know the disappointment of having your work returned to you and not shown. I thought every piece was of the caliber to be shown. Some work that maybe fell behind others in skill, made up for it in originality. So, the hard part was eliminating pieces. This had to be done because of limited space. | |

Let me know where you're showing, about awards you may have received, and Art News, Special Events or Classes being offered. Deadline April 22 (Happy Earth Day)
