Congress 2009 to celebrate the BCSLS 40TH Anniversary

Do you live to learn or learn to live?
How can you set yourself apart from everyone else?congress knowledge small

The theme of the BCSLS Congress 2009 is "Knowledge is Power" - technical knowledge to do the best job you can, health and lifestyle knowledge to bring balance to your life, knowledge of how to be kind to the environment so that the Earth can be sustainable for a long time, knowledge to be the best that you can be.

Congress 2009 in Harrison Hot Springs, October 1-4, promises something for everyone. The scientific committee has created an exciting, comprehensive scientific program, filled with progressive topics representative of all disciplines. An addition to the program this year is the First Time Attendees session, to help "newbies" get the most out of Congress.

Congress could not happen without the support of the Exhibitors, and once again they have joined forces to show us state of the art equipment and supplies, so necessary for our success.

Congress is an opportunity to network, to reconnect with friends and create new friendships and this is made possible by the social events - an Exhibitors Reception, Magic at Minter Gardens, a Windup Banquet at Harrison and a fun golf tournament. Also, to create balance, some lifestyle sessions will be held before and after the technical education sessions.

Congress 2009 will be particularly special, as we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the BCSLS. Past Board members will be invited to attend a reception the night before the Congress begins to share stories, memories and long time friendships. 40 years of history is something to cherish.

The "early bird" Congress registration deadline is September 11th but if you register before July 31 you can win a $100 gift certificate to the Harrison Hotel Spa. Already, over 35% of the available rooms at the Harrison Hotel have been taken, so don't be disappointed, book soon.

Come Plug into Congress 2009 and witness how "Knowledge is Power".
We'll see you in the hot tub at the Harrison Hot Springs Hotel and Spa, October 1-4, 2009.

BCSLS to Revise MLA Syllabus

The BCSLS is in the process of updating and revising the BCSLS MLA Program Syllabus that ensures that all MLA Education Programs meet the needs of employers in the province. The Syllabus describes the minimum level of knowledge and skills required for the Certification of a Medical Laboratory Assistant [MLA] in B.C.
The Board of Directors of the BCSLS has also imposed a moratorium on the approval of any new MLA Education Programs until such time as we can ascertain the current supply and demand scenario for MLAs and understand the challenges around practicum placements.
To this end, the BCSLS is going to conduct a formal survey of employers to determine the level of satisfaction with all MLA Education programs in the province. The survey results will assist in the revision process.
The review of the Syllabus should be complete by the end of September.

Back to Basics Course to be revamped

The Back to Basics correspondence course was initially introduced by the BCSLS in 1997. It was designed for MLTs who needed to upgrade their skills to work in a core lab setting.  Many years later and 400 clients later, the course continues to be a popular continuing education option for MLTs, particularly those that are foreign trained.
The CSMLS recognizes the Back to Basics course as an integral part of their credential recognition program.
It is now time to revamp and upgrade the course so that it meets the needs of MLTs well into the future.  All fourteen modules, which are delivered in self-directed DVD format, will be redone to make them current and innovative. Many of the original presenters will be utilized to deliver the topics and state of the art technology will be used to ensure the media is high quality and professional.
The BCSLS Board has allocated funds to the upgrading of Back to Basics and the work will commence in earnest in the early fall of 2009 when presenters are back from summer vacations. The upgrade will include new packaging and branding and once complete the entire program will be relaunched as Back to Basics '09.
