Happy Friday News
July 9, 2010 |
Greetings! , School has been out for two weeks and the big question I have for you is - Are your children or the children in your neighborhood bored or are they on-board? The 351 girls "on-board" at our summer camps have spent 7 days beating the heat wave in style! If you were to walk through the doors of any one of our centers you could enjoy fabulous food from around the world, compete in Olympic Games, explore the mysteries of our earth, blow up your own volcano, discover the creatures under the sea and of course enjoy water sports! As the talent show participants rocked the house, parents hurried in from work so they wouldn't miss the fun. And, when we hit the beaches for the first time this summer the older more experienced girls took hold of the hands of the younger girls as they ran through the waves and they looked like one big happy family of sisters.
Speaking of sisters - our four 2009-2010 Girl of the Year award winners in each of our four regions will board the train for New York City on July 27 where they will spend three days together, just like a family, touring, bonding and enjoying the benefits of their hard work. Becoming the Girl of the Year is a year long process of demonstrated leadership, individual growth and personal achievement, and participation in community projects and role modeling. The younger sister of our Nashua winner explained it best when she said: "I want to be the Girl of the Year, because I am Strong, Smart and Bold, but I know my sister will win, because she is my big sister and she has taught me just about everything I know!" Her sister, Paige Hubbard, did indeed win this honor in Nashua and she will join the other three winners - Ashley Durham, Megan Campbell, and Caitlin Blanchette in NYC as they begin their year of recognition.
Our new dinner club program in Nashua opened on July 1 and when the Menu Board read: Hot Dogs and Beans for the first night, 57 girls and four parents joined us for this ever-popular summer favorite! The dinner club in Nashua, named the Burke Street Café - is an extension of our Café Lauren dinner program in Manchester. In five days of operation, since July 1, the two kitchens have served 1,770 lunches and 351 dinners. Our meal programs are our answer to the ever-increasing hunger issues among our girls. As I visited the Manchester Girls' Center last night one of the campers came up to me and told me she likes to eat dinner at our program so she can go home and sleep without feeling hungry. Clearly we are meeting a vital need.
So I have to ask you one more time, - Is there a girl you know between the ages of 5 and 13 who is already bored with her summer vacation? - who might also benefit from our menu board? - or who might just like to get "on-board" and join the fun at Girls Inc. of New Hampshire?
Our summer camp is open to all girls and we have never turned a girl away due to her inability to pay. I am proud and HAPPY to say that this year we will award more summer camp financial aid than ever before in our history with a projected total of $200,000. Here is a small sampling of what our girls did at camp last week. In Concord, girls kept cool playing in the sprinkler, taking trips to the pool, enjoying a water balloon toss AND an ice cream social! One very shy 11 year-old girl at our Nashua camp has already made 5 new friends, has a new sense of self confidence and has even come up with ideas for activities that she would like to do with her group. She told her mom "I love summer camp and I even made friends too" - her mom was very excited to see her daughter make such huge steps in the first week of camp. Valeria was chosen for the camper of the week, which has just about made her whole summer! Manchester campers had a very busy first week with a highly successful talent show - that included a group who sang and acted out summer songs with several costume changes according to the songs, another group did a rap song and dressed in big baggy boy pants and baseball hats and were very comical. We had violin players, singers, and dancers - and we had several acts with hula-hoops! The girls in Rochester had a great trip to the beach! All of the trips, fun, excitement and summer friendships that happen at camp would not be available to our girls without the help of our community supporters. Once again, our friends at UPS have selected us as the beneficiary of their charity golf tournament. Last year, with your help, we earned over $25,000 from this event! You can help by purchasing Yankee Candles from us. Think of it as Holiday Shopping in July! We will receive 40% of the sale price and earn points toward a grand prize of $10,000. Just one last play on the words bored and board -sorry, I could not resist. I am pleased to announce our Board of Directors for 2010-2011 and say that we are so fortunate to have such wonderful individuals on board!!!
