Greetings! ,
For those of you who think winter will never be over, I have some advice. Stop and buy spring flowers and put them in your in office!
One of our generous donors has a Valentine's Day tradition of bringing a flower to each girl in our program. You should see the smiles on their faces when they are given their "rose." If it makes them so happy, I figure it will have the same effect on my employees.
The cold winter days have brought nothing but fun and new opportunities to our girls. The Manchester girls enjoyed a day of sledding at McIntyre Ski area and, in Concord, ice skating at White Park has been the rage.
If you drive by Nashua or Rochester you just might see some "Snow ladies" in front of our buildings!
Many of our families are still being warmed (literally) by the generosity of our "Genie in a Mug". Our very own board member, John Motta (the Genie) a Dunkin' Donuts owner, granted many wishes for heating oil , blankets, warm clothing and food. We are still giving out gift cards to our families who have found themselves in need of a little help this winter. After receiving one of the Hannaford gift cards, a little girl bounced into our Nashua Center with a big smile on her face and informed our Director that , "She got to have tacos the night before!" Speaking of magical figures like the Genie brings to mind the infatuation that all of the girls have with the Disney Princesses. In our GirlStart program, many of the girls wished for princess dresses. One of the would-be princesses required a dress much larger than the ones sold in the store. So the caring Director, not wanting her to be disappointed, went out and purchased a dress and expanded the seams. The young girl was so excited she immediately put on her dress and danced around the room with the other girls. In a recent visit to this program, my own heart was warmed as I spoke to a father who arrived to pick up his daughter. I introduced myself and asked him if he thought the program was benefiting his daughter. He looked at me and smiled and said not only is it helping her, it has encouraged me to learn to read too and we are now reading together! So perhaps winter is a cozy time of year to get out a good book, cuddle up with your children or grandchildren and take a walk in the world of fairytales and fantasies that just may come true! Or, just buy some flowers and dream of spring!
Sincerely,
