Happy Friday News
April 17, 2009 |
Greetings!, People are finding so many creative ways to support their favorite charities during these challenging times. I am happy to say that here at Girls Inc. we've witnessed, and benefitted from, many ways of creative giving.
"Running" to give has gone to a whole new level at our annual 5K Road Race. The participants in this year's race, which takes place tomorrow, have not only supported us by registering to run in high numbers, but many of them also set up fundraising pages online and raised more money than ever before. And, the number of registered runners this year has already surpassed any previous year - thanks to the great efforts of our race co-chairs - Graham, our Regional Director in Rochester and our VP of Human Resources, Christine, who just so happens to be running in the Boston Marathon on Monday.
"Indulging" to give- a good time was had by all who attended our charity night at the Nashua Margaritas. Members of both Nashua Rotary clubs came out to support us and, judging from the crowd, I would say we will make enough to make it well worth our time!
"Giving" just to give - the girls in our centers are always inspiring us in the ways they give. Our Concord center recently hosted an Easter egg hunt for children in the area. One of "our" girls won the golden egg in her category of 3rd & 4th graders - but she noticed a little 2 year-old who only had one egg in her basket, so she promptly gave her a bunch of her eggs to make her happy. A group of girls from our Rochester Girls Center recently attended a Fisher Cats baseball game. Of the 8 girls who attended, there were 3 who did not have any spending money with them. The other 5 girls all made it a point to buy extra food and treats so that no one felt left out.
"Unloading" to give - you have to picture this one. At our office in Manchester, my staff and I were trying to unload some great auction items from a Girls Inc. bus-turned-moving-van - double-parked on the main drag in front of our building - and haul them up to our 4th floor office. There were three large televisions and a very large, heavy gas grill. As luck would have it, our 4th floor neighbors were trying to move out some very heavy office furniture and haul it downstairs at the same time. You can just imagine how jammed up the elevator was! Sensing an opportunity, we suggested to our neighbors that "to save them from lifting all of that heavy furniture - they should just donate it to us!" I am happy to report that our office now has a new desk, conference table and filing cabinet! And, as a side note, we have several individuals interested in bidding on the televisions when our auction goes live!
At Girls Inc. of New Hampshire, we strive to give girls every opportunity to find their individual passion and to achieve their personal best. Thank you for your many creative ways of giving to help us carry on this important mission.
