Happy Friday News
March 20, 2009 |
Greetings!,
This story is guaranteed to make you cry, and then smile. Two years ago a little girl named Desiree walked into our program in Nashua. She was in first grade at the time and she had already been in 7 different schools. Desiree and her mother were forced to constantly be on the move to hide from her abusive father. They moved into the Norwell Home (a program for pregnant and parenting teens) and Desiree began attending our program. She was a frightened little girl with many behavior problems. Our staff made her feel safe and her self-esteem grew daily. After two years, it recently came time to move again, but this time was very different. Her mother graduated from the Norwell program and was choosing to go home to Brockton, MA to be near her family and get a job. Desiree's father is in jail and, for the first time in her life, she does not have to be afraid. The girls at the Nashua Center had a going away party for her. They gave her a Girls Inc. t-shirt that they all signed as a reminder that her friends are still thinking of her. Her mom was so happy because it was the first time Desiree was able to say a proper goodbye. This time she did not leave sad, she left full of confidence with a big smile on her face.
As we get closer and closer to our auction I am continually amazed at the generosity of people. I was speaking to a new donor and asked him if he could possibly donate a gift certificate to his restaurant. He thought about it and then said, "How about two tickets to a Patriots regular season game, right on the 50 yard line?" Imagine the look on my face!
At a recent Rotary meeting, one of my staff was approached by another Rotarian. He mentioned to her that another non-profit had requested his support. He said after he thought about it he decided he would give to them, but not without giving the same amount to us because, after all, she was in his club! Thank you to the generous donor and to the other non-profit.
Good things are happening for us and the girls we serve, all over the state. In our Western Region we have just contracted to deliver internet safety programs that will reach over 600 students in the Keene and Monadnock Middle Schools. Our in-school enrichment programs continue to thrive and the rewards are many. In one classroom, we were passing out t-shirts to the participants and all of the girls ran to put them on, all except one. When our instructor asked her why she did not want to put it on, she answered, "I cannot pay for it." Once she was told the shirt was free, her face lit up with a huge smile and off she ran to put on her new shirt!
On a personal note, all of your wonderful emails in response to this newsletter have put this smile on my face. Thank you.
Have a great week,
Catherine Duffy Cullity, CEO |

20th Annual Auction Coming Soon!
Online auction goes live on April 29, and runs until May 26, 2009. Log on and start previewing items now. We'll be adding items daily and hundreds of great items will be available for your bidding pleasure.
On Friday, May 29th, join us at The Event Center at C. R. Sparks for a Gala Silent and Live Gaveled Auction to close the final items.
Last year's event had a sell-out crowd so buy your tickets early!
Auction Items Still Needed! - We will continue to seek items right up until the auction opens, and even beyond - the more items we have, the more money we can raise for much needed scholarships for after-school programs and summer camp. The earlier you donate your item, the more exposure you will receive. You can go online today and make your item donation quickly and easily - and it will appear on the site in a day or so. If you prefer, you can call 603-625-1296 or email Info@girlsincnewhampshire.org about donating items. Every auction item will receive a minimun of one month's exposure on our online auction site - with a picture and description and your company logo and link to your site! We have been running auctions for 20 years and have many followers, from New England and beyond, who particpate and bid every year. They help spread the word about our auction and your item and bring more visitors and bidders each year. To donate an item, or refer friends, go to the auction website from our home page at Girls Inc. of New Hampshire | |
