Happy Friday News!
March 13, 2009 |
Greetings! , Oh what a week! There are so many good things happening. Citizens Bank opened the doors of their Verizon Suite inviting 9 girls and 3 staff from our Manchester Center to be their guests at the Manchester Monarchs hockey game last Friday night. The girls were so excited, dancing around the suite, exploring everything - especially the food! They had the opportunity to participate in "Chuck a Puck," which brought out the giggles. One girl managed to get a coupon from the blimp and she was so excited you would have thought it was a$100 bill! The 9 girls were chosen to attend because they had won the honor of being named a Girl of the Month or a Girl of the Week at their center. As more and more parents face financial challenges we are working hard to secure funding to provide scholarships for our summer program. A most generous grant of $25,000 was awarded to us from the Cogswell Benevolent Trust to help our families. We need to raise a total of $151,000 so only $126,000 to go! Our girls seem to be making the news on a regular basis. The Nashua Telegraph decided to go to the experts for their recent article on Barbie's 50th birthday. Their answers were mixed some loved her and others did not know what the big deal was. One young girl thought Barbie could celebrate her birthday by eating fruit and vegetables with some birthday cake! Read the article here.
Our volunteers continue to amaze me. Irene Burke, a local Dental Hygienist and friend of Girls Inc. of New Hampshire, launched her dental hygiene program at the Manchester Girls' Center. The program started with a pre-test to see how the girls were feeling about their smile. Here are some of their responses: "Yes, I love to smile." "No, my teeth are ugly." "No, because I lost a lot of teeth." "Yes, it makes me happy to smile." "Other people like my smile so that makes me happy." "No, because people tell me I have buck teeth." "Yes, because my teeth are nice and shiny." "No, because no matter how many times I brush, my smile does not look good." "Yes, because when I smile people smile back!" A total of 50 girls took the test - 41 loved their smile, 9 did not. Irene and her friends are going to help all the girls to have smiles they can love! Today, as I sat at a busy intersection in Manchester wishing the light would change, like so many of us often do, I witnessed the kindest act that I just have to share. An elderly woman, leaning on her cane, was trying to get up the courage to cross the street. As she stood there shaking, I noticed a man jump out of his very large snow removal truck, blocking all the traffic at the light. He proceeded to the woman, offered her his arm and escorted her across the street - then he jumped back into his truck and went about his day! Well, he made my day! I smiled all the way to work. Have a great week.
