Happy Friday News! February 20, 2009 |
Greetings! ,
Support for our girls comes in so many ways! The number of emails and phone calls we get from individuals who want to get involved with our program never ceases to amaze me. We were contacted this week by Kegan Fate Publishing from California! The company, founded by sisters Megan and Kimi Fate, recently published "Megan Hearts Baking," the first book of the Megan Heart series with a vision to encourage and empower young girls to discover their passions and hobbies. Sound like us? Apparently, they agree! Believing our mission to be so like theirs, they volunteered to jump on a plane and bring a "bake off"/ book reading & signing event to our girls. They will arrive in May and do a full day of acting out their first book, "Megan Hearts Baking." There is no charge for this wonderful event. Watch for an invitation to attend with your granddaughters, daughters, and little sisters.
A phone call this week from our new friends at Cabot Creamery Cooperative brought another unsolicited offer. They offered to provide cheese displays for our guests to enjoy at two of our major events and will also donate a beautiful cheese gift basket for our upcoming auction.
A dear friend of mine, who recently beat cancer, asked if he could volunteer in our program. He feels so lucky to be alive he wants to share his joy. He gave all the girls in our Manchester center each a flower on Valentine's Day. Speaking of Valentine's Day, girls at our Concord center enjoyed a surprise party complete with chocolate strawberries, candy hearts, and special valentines. The hit of the day was a game called "giggle belly," - I think you had to be there! This great day was provided by our friends at Sam's Club.
Girls Inc. of New Hampshire had the opportunity to give back this week too! We helped a local pre-school (Noah's Ark) set up a USDA Food program for their children. This new program will be supervised by our Chief Operating Officer and Noah's will receive new revenue of about $30,000 each year.
Although many of the families using our program are facing unemployment, they still find ways to stay positive and give back. Parents of our girls are doing everything from volunteering to shovel our sidewalks, and clean our buildings, to helping us seek auction items. They make my job easier and that makes me happy!
