Huenink holds an art degree in dimensional art from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin. After founding an advertising agency that grew to a staff of over 60, Huenink opened one of the first video animation studios in the U.S. Huenink started his art career as a painter and metal sculptor, then expanded his media experimentation into wildlife and free form wood carving. He holds many awards in carving in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas.
One of Huenink's varied careers included ministry. While pastoring at the United Methodist Church in Wisconsin, Huenink reacquainted himself with photography, using an early digital camera, and his picture taking grew from a love to a passion. During his pastorate, Huenink's wife of 42 years passed away. Huenink retired and moved to Michigan where he eventually married a woman that he knew in junior high. Today, Huenink is an artistic photographer, poet, wood worker, furniture builder, painter and glass blower.

Huenink envisions this, his first one-person exhibit will not only inspire others to take great photos, but will encourage them to look and see what is around them. Huenink says it's important that people capture what they see in a way that makes others look at their pictures and, "smile, or just pause and stare, or ask what is that, or I've never seen it that way before." Huenink says his favorite subjects are birds, especially eagles and the egret family, but he's also drawn to architecture, landscapes, people (if shots are candid) and pets. He enjoys shooting sports' pictures if his grandchildren are involved.

Huenink notes the important aspect of his exhibit will be presentation. "Most of what you will see is NOT framed and matted, under glass. You will see photos printed on aluminum tiles, ceramic tiles, aluminum sheets, canvas, silk banners, and cromalux wooden panels." Huenink says that some of his photos are, "soft focus, making them look like a painting." Others are, "crisp and over exposed."

Huenink's exhibit includes 50 photos and most all of them will be for sale except for some of his earlier photos where the negatives have been lost. The show will also comprise some of his early paintings, duck carvings, glass blowing, wood working, wooden boxes and welded creations. Huenink says he will be selling his matted prints at lower prices. He adds, "If anyone wants a photo produced in a different size and presented on a different sub-structure, they can all be custom made, except for my large prints that are limited editions of 10."

Digital Photo Workshop
with John Huenink
$40 Members
$45 Non-Members

There are two dates to choose from:
1. Tuesday, Sept 15, 7:00-9:00 pm
2. Thursday, Sept 24, 7:00-9:00 pm

This is a class for photographers, of any age, and it will help your average pictures become a work of art.

During the first 45 minutes we will learn about perspective, unequal space, framing, the horizon, cropping, shadow, reflections and more. Perhaps we will even deal with a manual setting or two! Then we will take pictures outside and evaluate them. The students will select the best of the best and the winner will take home a 5x7 matted photo that John has for sale at the exhibit.

Call to reserve your space, then bring your camera and share a fun evening!
Contact Sarah Hess, Program Coordinator, for further information at 637-1041.

Membership Drive
"Our members are the backbone of the South Haven Center for the Arts", says Executive Director Marie Maguire, who looks forward to the upcoming Membership Drive that introduces new membership benefits and invites community participation in the Art Center.

Maguire, who has been directing the Art Center for about two years, says she is grateful to the volunteer work of present members who've made her position easier. "All of the changes in the past 16 months have evolved because of member input. This is an exciting time to join because the ground is fertile for new ways of doing things."

When asked why people should join the Art Center, Maguire says, "People who join the South Haven Center for the Arts, in addition to receiving member discounts, help support efforts to expand cultural offerings in this community, meet people with common interests, developing lifelong relationships, and they become part of a team that can truly make a difference by bringing the arts to the next generation."
