Spring Gala Benefits Area Students
Recently, $1,600 was raised for youth scholarships that will provide opportunities for students who may not be able to afford to attend Center Studio art classes at the South Haven Center for the Arts. The funds were raised through the successful Spring Gala Fundraiser, held in May, that brought in over $27,000 for Art Center programming and general fund.

In addition, $500 was awarded for scholarships through the Youth Advisory Council (YAC), $500 from the South Haven Community Foundation and another $1,500 from Wal Mart, according to the Center's Executive Director Marie Maguire. "I am very pleased that we can provide these scholarships to area students, thanks to support from art center members and the community," said Maguire.

40 area students have been nominated for scholarships (by their art teachers) and will be able to attend 5 one hour-long sessions, held Tuesday through Friday, beginning June 23 and ending August 7.

Sarah Benson, South Haven elementary art teacher/artist, and Tina Walter, a certified Visual Arts Education K-12 instructor (and decorative muralist), will be instructing these fun, lively classes. They comprise, in part, making Polymer Clay People Magnets, Wind Puppets, Tincraft Ornaments, Funky Film Collage, Stick Sculptures and creating Mexican Yarn Painting. Every day means a new project.

To learn more about the youth scholarships, the Center Studio Classes and instructors, call 269-637-1041, check out our website or stop in the Art Center, located at 600 Phoenix Street. Hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekends, 1-4 p.m.

George Martinez was born into a loving, migrant workers' family and was one of twelve children. He has had a life long enthusiasm for art, yet did not fully pursue his creative talents until 2004. A barber by trade, he realized an unusual medium for his work, he discovered he could create beautiful portraits using human hair. George applies "human hair cut into tiny pieces and manipulates them on a ground of felt to create passionate portraits."

After showing his innovative work to artist Andrew Freemire he was encouraged to put together a body of work that could be exhibited. George has created more than seventy large scale works, had nine exhibits and sold more than forty pieces. He has lectured to numerous art groups, school assemblies and colleges.

You will have the opportunity to meet the artist at the reception and then see a demonstration of his work at the Potluck / Artist Demonstration on Sunday, July 12, 1:30-4:00 pm. Save the date!

NOW sculpture/enviroment Exhibit
Main Gallery Exhibit, June 19 - July 26. Opening Reception, June 20, 5:00-7:00 pm.

While exhibiting at various venues, the Chicago-based 3-D 12 artists have identified their commonly held environmental interests and concerns.

"Our personal perceptions on the issue cover as broad a range as our materials of choice. Decomposed lost and found objects, recycled plastic and metal, salvaged scrap wood, earth and water are some materials which are effectively reconfigured to translate our ideas into physical forms." The sculptural works take on subjective and collective meaning to contributre to a genuine meta-landscape.

The 3-D 12 artists are: Shelley Gilchrist, Peter Gray, Alan Emerson Hicks, Ruyell Ho, Beth Kamhi, Jim MacRoberts, Bill Moll, Mimi Peterson, Robert Putnam, Eric H. Steele, and Michelle Stone

A few members of 3-D group will be speaking about their work at 6:00 pm at the opening reception on June 20th.
