PARENT TIP
Help Your Child Strive
for Perfect Attendance
Research shows that the single most important factor contributing to student achievement is school attendance.

A student who is absent from school may be able to copy missed notes.

However, other important aspects of the lessons are lost forever.

Absent students miss out on discussion, raised questions, explanations and much more. Students fall behind and sometimes never recover.

To support good school attendance:

  • Talk with your child about the importance of attending school regularly.
  • Avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.
  • Make sure your student eats healthy foods and gets enough sleep and exercise.
  • Don't accept excuses for why your child "must" miss or be late for school.
  • Discuss what happened at school each day.
  • Support school rules and consequences for skipping class and being tardy.
  • Provide incentives for improving school attendance and promptness.

Prep and Prep+ Accelerated program is unveiled

The Prep and Prep+ Accelerated Program, developed over a two-year period, began this school year.

The program is designed to challenge the high achieving academic student in a rigorous math and English/Language Arts curriculum that engages in critical thinking, problem solving, and acceleration.

"The Prep and Prep + math and English/language arts curriculum were developed by a committee of advanced English and math teachers along with principals, and our gifted coordinator under my direction. It was established over the course of two years of research and data analysis. Our goal is to provide our high achieving students content acceleration in English and math so they can enroll in more advanced placement and dual credit courses while in high school.  This will provide opportunities to enter college above the freshman level and qualify students for more scholarships from universities.  We are truly excited for what our Prep and Prep + program provides for Kenton County students and parents," said Barb Martin, Deputy Superintendent.

Healthier lunch options greet students

Students health and well being are the reason a healthier lunch menu was introduced this school year.

"Our students' health and well being are a priority.  We want to do our very best for every student every day," said Dr. Kim Banta, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Community Engagement.

"We have a new and exciting menu to tempt the palate and educate. Students will find a variety of healthier options such as fish tacos, kale chips, roasted zucchini, peaches, pears, raw vegetables, roasted butternut squash, and more on the new menu," said Dr. Banta.

You are invited to taste Edamame as part of the new, healthier Kenton County School District lunch menu.

If you would like to see some of the healthier options available to students this year, please join us for a sampling of Edamame.

The Japanese soybean is loaded with protein, fiber, and other nutrients like iron, calcium and vitamin C, and grown locally at Sun Sugar Farms in Verona.

The taste test is Friday, August 17 from  11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Piner Elementary.
