 Hanner's Heroes recognized for making a difference 

Hanner's Heroes accepts award
Hanner's Heroes, a community service initiative, received the 2011 Champions for Children: The Next Generation Award at the 4C for Children Gala on Janaury 28. In attendance were Bev Collins, Karen Collins, Tim Hanner, Dr. Terri Cox-Cruey, and Tonya Brummer.

The work of Hanner's Heroes was recognized at the 4C Champion for Children: The Next Generation Gala on January 28 at the Westin Hotel in downtown Cincinnati.

Hanner's Heroes, a student-led and student-empowered community service initiative, gives high school students the opportunity to give back to the community through two volunteer program opportunities, One-to-One Reading program or Shining Stars Mentoring program.

The program trains and places 500 to 800 high school students to work one on one weekly with elementary students to improve literacy and social skills. Superintendent Terri Cox-Cruey accepted the award on behalf of the district. "This program changes lives and builds on skills needed to compete in the global work market." Also in attendance at the gala were Chairperson Karen Collins, former Superintendent Tim Hanner, and Coordinators Beverlee Collins and Tonya Brummer.

4Cfor Children, is a pioneering leader, resource and advocate for high-quality early childhood education and care in this region and serves as the resource and referral agency for a 23-county area in Southwest Ohio, the Miami Valley and Northern Kentucky. The mission of 4C is to improve the quality, effectiveness and accessibility of early childhood education and care in the region so every child has a positive experience and a foundation for success in school and life.

Ginger Gray prepares to climb Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina  
Ginger Gray wins national award

It has been a big year for Ginger Gray and it is about to get bigger. Ginger Gray, Kenton County School District Food Services Director, leaves February 5, 2012, to climb Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina. 

 

Mt. Aconcagua is the highest mountain in North and South America and one of the seven summits. The climb is 23,000 feet major acclimatization. She will be on the mountain from February 10 through February 27 and will wear a tracking devise.

Ginger recently received national acclaim from the television network, TLC, when it recognized Kenton County Schools as having one of the

Ginger  is known as an innovator. Through her leadership, the cafeteria's implemented salad bars and energy efficient plates and utensils. She supervises over 100 staff members and purchases food for 11,000 students in 18 schools.

 

A few years ago she was chosen to tour the school food program in China. In March, 2010, Ginger was named the Outstanding Director of the Year by the Kentucky School Nutrition Association. She is past president of the association and currently serves on the KY AFHK's State Steering Committee.
