Greetings!
|
We've not
sent you a family update for awhile. I'm sending this out to friends,
family, prayer team members, and the gathering group of new friends at
Great Oaks Church. We love you all - God has given us the joy of
sharing life with amazing people. As we celebrate our Lord's
resurrection we know that we live because he died and now lives. And we
know that we can love one another because he first loved us. God is so good.
With Love, Paul & Tammy

Postponement and Progress
|
We have now been living in Warren, Michigan for seven months. We're working with Kensington Church and the Reformed Church in America (RCA) to plant a new contemporary, Spirit-filled, Christ centered congregation that will be located in Rochester Hills. The original plan was to work with Kensington to send out publicity and do a major presentation to see if we could raise a viable plant team by the end of December 2008. For various reasons the plans have been postponed several times. We did send out a large mailing, and will be doing the presentation before the Kensington congregation in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, things have begun to happen.
Only two months ago we had not yet had the opportunity to connect with potential team members. At that time no one really knew who we were. Today, as I write, dozens of people are prayerfully considering joining this new work. We are encouraged and thankful. Over and over again people share that for months God had been stirring in their hearts about a church transition, and when they heard of Great Oaks we were just what their hearts were longing for! We sense that Jesus is at work building His Church, something only he can do!
We have held two "Village Gatherings" so far. A Village at Great Oaks is a medium sized group (20-30) that meets for worship, corporate prayer, teaching, the Lord's Supper, community and sharing. The Village is also missional - reaching out together into the community. The concept is innovative, and so far we really like what we see God doing! |

Tammy, Stephen and I, together with Tammy's mom Joanne, all had the joy of flying out to spend some time with our daughters in Manhattan. The occasion was Aleyse' Spring Dance Performance with Syren Dance Company. Aleyse was incredible, as always, and we had a great time with Aleyse and Laura.
Our younger daughter, Laura, spent Spring Break in Budapest, Hungary as part of the New York University business curriculum. She had a good and interesting experience. She also was accepted to a summer internship with Cole Haan, a high end fashion design and merchandising company - a fun job for a young woman! Late breaking news: We just got word a few minutes ago that Laura badly sprained her ankle. New York City is not the place for crutches, but the doctor told her she has to keep weight off her ankle for several days. Bless her Lord!
David joined us for Easter. David and I spent several great hours together talking about life. Among other things, he has to decide whether he'll stay at Grand Valley next year or come live with us and go to Community College here to avoid increasing student loans.
Stephen continues in home schooling. We continue to need a home in the Rochester Hills area where we are planting Great Oaks. We are trusting God to open doors for Tammy to find a job (that's tough in this economy), or to open some other door as only he can. He knows our need and sees all things!

| Re-Ordination in Holland on May 17 |
For those of you on the west side of Michigan, we will be over your way the weekend
of May 16 & 17. I will be re-ordained in the Reformed Church in
America on May 17 at 3 pm. The probable location will be Harlem Reformed Church (6854 144th Avenue,
Holland, MI 49424). I'll confirm the location in a future email. You are invited!

| Reflection |
Several weeks ago I entered an
extended time of fasting and prayer for the future of Great Oaks
Church. I well know that the Lord must build his Church. While
in Manhattan I took a long walk one beautiful morning in Central Park.
As I watched the sun rise and cast a golden gleam on towering
buildings, I ask the Lord why I was sensing such struggle within. I
felt the Lord speaking in my spirit, telling me that laying the foundation for a new church is intense work. First rubble must be cleared. Then the ground must be prepared through prayer, worship and surrender. Next the foundation must be laid - the cornerstone being Jesus and the foundation being the truth of God's Word.
I
know we don't hear perfectly, but from what I sense, we are in a
spiritual battle that requires prayer and perseverance. I shouldn't be
surprised! But we know that greater is he that is in us, than he that
is in the world! We press forward, knowing that the mighty hand of God
is with us!

| How to Pray |
Your prayers of faith will be powerful and effective, releasing God's grace on our behalf. Please pray for:
- Spiritual protection and blessing for the gathering core of wonderful people at Great Oaks Church.
- Paul as he seeks to lay the foundation of this new congregation.
- Tammy as she continues to seek a job so we can purchase a home in our target area of Rochester Hills.
- Stephen as he continues to be home schooled.
- David as he seeks to decide whether he should continue at Grand Valley State or join us next year in Rochester Hills.
- Laura as she moves towards finals at NYU, and for healing and grace for a badly sprained ankle - rushing from subway to subway with a backpack loaded with textbooks is hard to do on crutches!
- Aleyse as she pursues her dance career and waitresses.
Give thanks with us for the Lord for his amazing faithfulness.
