WELCOME
As you may have noticed, technology news doesn't slow down in the summer. There's a lot going on and even more being planned. We are pleased to announce the graduation of Field Forensics, which will be moving from the Innovation Center to its new offices in St. Petersburg in August. Craig Johnson and his colleagues have done an amazing job of product development and marketing for international clients and are truly one of the Innovation Center's success stories. Watch for news about the ribbon cutting and grand opening of Field Forensics new offices. Next, you'll want to mark your calendar for the Tampa area's first combined BarCamp/Code Camp on Saturday, October 13 at the USF Tampa College of Business Administration. More than 1,000 software developers, programmers, service providers, educators and other technology professionals are expected to attend this educational, innovation and networking opportunity. For more information, visit www.barcamptampabay.org or www.tampacodecamp.com. You'll note that we're spotlighting Fowler White Boggs as this month's featured eHub sponsor. No mention of the firm would be complete without recognizing the contributions of Chris Paradies, Ph.D., shareholder and firm practice leader in the areas of Biotechnology and Life Sciences, Intellectual Property Protection and Patents & Trade Secrets. In addition to serving as advisory board chairman and StartUp Xchange mentor, Chris is an outstanding community advocate for the Bay Area. We are so grateful for his support and hard work! Tonya Elmore President

Achieving Better Results for Your Software Projects
by Ian Ippolito
For any of us who have seen a software project crash and burn, or simply never make it to the finish line, it's probably no surprise that only 32 percent of software projects actually succeed, based on figures from The Standish Group. The others are either late, over budget or are missing critical features, resulting in billions of dollars of loss for the businesses that needed them.
The good news is that best practices exist that can quickly and substantially improve your success rate. These are clustered in the general areas of hiring and managing, so let's discuss what will help you handle projects with confidence.
Hiring Often the first consideration with hiring is the location of the workers. Choices include: * Onshore (in the United States): hourly rates range from $25-250 per hour * Near shore (Ireland, Philippines): $15-75 per hour * Offshore (India, Romania, Pakistan): $5-25 per hour * Further offshore: Cheapest, but there are tradeoffs and additional issues
Other location-related considerations include: * Copyright issues: As most third world countries lack enforceable copyright laws, it's important to identify a country with effective intellectual property and copyright laws. An alternative is to split your project into pieces so no one supplier has the full project. (More ...)

 | Federal Defense & Technology Showcase Offers Defense Contracting Opportunities
| Local firms interested in defense industry contracting should plan to attend the 2012 Florida Defense & Technology Showcase September 17-19 at Sheraton Sand Key on Clearwater Beach.
Now in its sixth year, the program for subcontractors and defense industry contractors is presented by Tampa Bay Innovation Center and Florida Federal Contractors Association (FFCA) and hosted by Congressman C.W. Bill Young.
The reverse trade show on September 18 allows subcontractors to exhibit and meet defense industry contractors looking for new suppliers. A targeted "matchmaking" event that afternoon will match participating prime contractors with exhibiting suppliers based on the purchasing and supply needs of the prime contractors.
The three-day program begins with a private reception at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium on Monday, September 17, limited to invited guests and gold-level event sponsors. Tuesday, September 18 is the Showcase with events described above, a luncheon presentation and networking reception. For the second year, a golf tournament will be held on the third day, Wednesday, September 19, at Belleair Country Club.
Registration and sponsorship information for the event are available on the Showcase website, www.fdtshowcase.com. For more information, contact contact Jen Suereth, Tampa Bay Innovation Center, at suerethj@tbinnovates.com or 727-547-7340
