Tonya 2011WELCOME

At a recent national meeting of business incubators, one of the major points of discussion was the distinction between the role of incubators as job creators and the role of other technology support organizations, many of whom are primarily wealth creators for the business owners.

Although each type of organization plays an important role in advancing the Tampa Bay area as a technology-friendly community, we are proud that Tampa Bay Innovation Center is best known for its ability to create high paying jobs and support innovation.  Following are a few recent statistics from 2011:
  • Job creation:  In the most recent fiscal year, Tampa Bay Innovation Center clients created/retained 80 jobs, with an average annual salary of $65,000.
  • Innovation:  Our in-house clients have more than 80 patents and have created 50 new products.
  • Clients: More than 150 technology business owners received advisory services from the Innovation Center's committee members and specialized programs.
  • Other participants: There are more than 1,500 participants in our entrepreneurial network.
  • Events:  Nearly 1,000 entrepreneurs, technology business owners and professionals attended educational programs and events hosted by the Innovation Center.
  • Volunteers: More than 75 volunteers provided more than 400 hours of advice to Innovation Center clients and program support.
We invite you to join us in whatever capacity suits your interests. Whether you are interested in attending one of our programs, are a prospective client or volunteer, or are interested in becoming better connected with other technology innovators, we look forward to hearing from you.

The Future of Social Media for Business
As the sale of smartphones and tablet computers rapidly increases, so does the importance of social media for business. These mobile devices - immediate, interactive and at least for now, controlled by the user -- are critical to how social media is evolving. Users can choose what they see and when, although as we learned from our conversation with March's TECH Talk speaker and social media expert Antony Francis, this will begin to change as technology progresses.

Being social for business

Social media is an online conversation. Think of it as online networking. It is a tool that every business can benefit from and should be utilizing. While not every social network will be right for a company, identifying priority audiences and the social networks they use frequently can help establish where a company should be present. (More...)

StartUp Xchange
Have questions about your next steps in entrepreneurship?  Entrepreneurs at all stages are invited to attend the next StartUp Xchange from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19 at Champps Americana Restaurant, 2223 N. West Shore Blvd., Tampa, FL 33607

This is a great informal opportunity for entrepreneurs, talent in transition, scientists, funders, innovators, technology professionals and engineers to make connections in the Tampa Bay area innovation marketplace and learn from each other and from the Tampa Bay Innovation Center mentors whose experience can help further their idea or startup company.

Our mentors will be Mike Eitler, Group125; Chris Paradies, Fowler White Boggs, and Dino Eliadis, DE Inc.
