WELCOME

Tonya 2011

We're so pleased to report on a very successful new event. Last month we held our first StartUp Xchange, a new opportunity for entrepreneurs to meet up around the Tampa Bay area and discuss various topics with STAR TEC mentors.  Held at The Grape at International Plaza in Tampa, the first StartUp Xchange featured STAR TEC mentors Chris Paradies of Fowler White Boggs P.A. and Mike Eitler of Blue Lion Consulting Inc. and had a great turnout with 25 people attending - particularly exciting because we expected 15 and similar programs around the country started with five! Thanks to everyone who attended and we're already looking forward to the next.  If you weren't able to make it, details are coming soon on the next one, so be sure to check your inbox and our website.

Sincerely,

Tonya Elmore

Coworking: when working alone is not enough

Over the years, workers in the technology and creative fields have redefined what work looks like...and even where it takes place!  Far from a traditional office, their preferred environment has morphed from the isolation of a home office to the local coffee house and now to coworking, an arrangement that provides the best of all these options.

As reported in The New York Times several years ago, the concept of coworking appears to have originated in 2005 when a lone computer programmer named Brad Neuberg coined the term to describe flexible space that allowed independent workers to gain structure and community.

Now well established enough to merit its own Wikipedia definition, it's "a style of work that involves a shared working environment...yet independent activity...

STAR TEC Client Gains Momentum
Altorr Logo

Altorr Freedom Technologies (www.altorr.com) has already come a long way since it became a STAR TEC client in 2009. In addition to launching and successfully selling its first product, the company plans to increase staff and introduce new products as early as summer of 2011.

Founded in 2008, Altorr has defined its mission as giving people personal freedom and improving their quality of life and care by extending their capabilities through innovation and affordable technologies.  "Our passion is to change the world for the elderly and the disabled, especially veterans," says Tim Barber, Altorr president and CEO.

Barber's interest in maximizing people's capabilities is one he has pursued for years, first as founder of Robey-Barber Insurance Services and more recently as chairman of the board of All Children's Hospital and former chairman of the board of trustees of Easter Seals of Tampa Bay.
