You Might be United Methodist IF. . .

You recognize the name John Wesley as the founder of Methodism

You are aware of (practice) the Means of Grace

John Wesley believed that Jesus is God's means of grace. For him, the

"means of grace" were also "works of piety" (spiritual disciplines) and

"works of mercy" (doing good to others). He said that means of grace are:

"...outward signs, words, or actions, ordained of God, and appointed for this

end, to be the ordinary channels whereby he might convey to men,

preventing, justifying, or sanctifying grace."

You know John Wesley's Quadrilateral to be

You know we are a connectional church.

          1.      Scripture

          2.      Tradition

          3.      Reason

          4.      Experience

This year 2011 we will explore the richness of United Methodism in this

newsletter (the Connection).

How are United Methodist like other Christians?

How are United Methodist Distinctive?

8th Annual Antiques and Collectibles Appraisal Fair

Saturday, February 19, 2011

10AM - 2 PM

On Saturday February 19, 2011, the Mt. Moriah United Methodist Women will sponsor the 8th Annual Antiques and Collectibles Appraisal Fair.  We are privileged to have three qualified appraisers again this year.  They are Bob Branson, Bill Rainey and Mike Brandley.  They will be happy to look at your item and give you an honest appraisal.

The cost per item is $5.00 or 6 items for $25.00.

The following information will explain how the appraisal fair works:

New and seasoned collectors alike often have items for which the value and history are a mystery.  Finding out more about these objects requires finding an expert.  One way to do so is to take advantage of a local "Appraisal Day",

Where you can bring in your items to a roomful of experts and have them take a look at your item, or item, and give you some information about them.

No appointment is needed.

Choose your oldest or most unusual items: examples of object to bring to an appraisal fair include things that have been in the family for generations or unusual items.

Bring pictures of large furniture in the item is too large to transport usually you can still get an informal appraisal by bringing pictures of your item take pictures from every angle front back and interior details such as a drawer.

Do some research first.  To get the most of the time you spend with your appraiser do your own research first then you can ask more detailed question

Have reasonable expectation.  With the popularity of such shows as "The Antiques Roadshow" some people get their hopes up.  It is important not to have too high of expectations.

Take notes: you will receive a spoken appraisal only so bring a notebook for jotting down information.  Besides the dollar value the appraiser can give you an overview on the history of the item.  The informal spoken appraisal is meant mainly for your enlightenment.  If you need a formal written appraisal (for insurance or probate) you'll need to schedule an appointment with an appraiser.  Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to have a few items appraised up to $1,500 to have a collection appraised.

Any questions please contact Doris Huntington at 947-0987

Food will be available.

Just for your information, the spring rummage sale will be held May 5, 6 and 7.

This is a change to the regular schedule so we wanted to let you know early.

Wheels for the World
To donate a wheelchair or any adaptive aids, or for more information about Wheels for the World, contact Chuck Lynch.

Wheels for the World provides a free wheelchair, along with the Gospel of Jesus Christ to children and adults affected by disability worldwide.

Since 1994, our Wheels for the World ministry has presented the Gospel by delivering wheelchairs and Bibles in developing countries. But Wheels for the World is not simply about "dropping off a wheelchair." It's about changing the hearts, minds, and lives of people. It's about transforming societies, village by village, person by person. Wheels for the World shares the love of Jesus Christ, extended through the gift of mobility, bringing hope, joy, and salvation to children and adults with disabilities around the world.

How Wheels for the World Works

Step 1

Donated Wheelchairs

Volunteers, known as "Chair Corps", collect used, but restorable, wheelchairs across the United States.

You can volunteer in the following ways: Donate a Wheelchair, Become a Chair Corps Volunteer, or Organize a Wheelchair Drive. Find Chair Corps Volunteers and Drop-Off Locations near you.

Step 2

Transportation

Transportation of the wheelchairs to restoration shops and shipping ports is an ongoing need. With over 10,000 wheelchairs collected each year, we are always looking for help.

Volunteer to Transport Donated Wheelchairs

Step 3

Restoration

Inmates at correctional facilities across the United States restore used wheelchairs to like-new condition.

We're actively looking for more locations.

Step 4

Distribution

Each wheelchair recipient receives a custom-fit wheelchair and training in wheelchair use and upkeep. Team members also present each recipient with a Bible and the Gospel message.

Health Care Study

Our Council of Bishops has called for legislative health care reform in the United States that is inclusive, affordable, accessible, and accountable. An On-line, Five-Week Health Care and Faith bible study series has been developed.  Each session will approach the question of how health care relates to faith through these lenses.

·      What does it mean for care to be inclusive?

·      What are the benefits and downsides to this?

·      What is affordability?

·      What does accessibility require of us?

·      How can such a system be accountable?

Each topic will be approached from the perspective of scripture, listening for a Word of deep hope and meaningful justice.  We will discuss what such health care meant in the past, as well as what it means to us today in our own neighborhoods and communities.

What words, concerns and reservations come to your mind when you hear the phrase "health care"?

·      Do you worry about your health, your family's health?

·      Do you wonder, as you listen to the news, how your faith relates to the health care debates that you hear?

In this five week study, you'll have an opportunity to learn, listen, and share your own hopes about what health (and being healthy in America) means to faith.  You'll hear the personal stories of fellow United Methodists from across Ohio who have experienced firsthand what it means to think about health care as people of faith.

Doctors, lay people, pastors, small business owners, and advocates will share with us, and we'll respond by listening for God's voice, asking, "How should we respond"?  We'll read scripture, consider John Wesley's perspective on the importance of health care to Methodists, and pray together. Join us in participating in this Health Care Study.

Christmas and New Year Wishes from the Ark of Learning

ark logoDecember was such a busy time around the Ark.  Anticipation of winter snow and holiday festivities gets the adrenalin goin'.  As if children need any more reasons to elevate their energy levels!  We weathered the snow days, the postponement of our Christmas pageant, and the West Clermont Schools having being in session until the 23rd of December.

May I tell you just how adorable the children were in their portrayal of the Christmas Story.  It never ceases to amaze me how touched I get when I see those sweet faces telling the story of Jesus' birth.  We tried to stay busy this last week with pajama day, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree with the Linda Mason Puppets, the Amelia Library storyteller, Santa's Workshop, and a visit from Santa himself!  We're going to need a week to recover from all this excitement.  But never fear, the Ark is open Monday through Thursday for those parents needing child care during the week between Christmas and New Year's.

On behalf of all the staff at the Ark of Learning, we want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy 2011.

Youth Alive

How long has it been since you've looked at the Youth Alive section of the church's web site?  Well, it's time to look again!  Very soon there will be some great changes to the page.  We are adding links to scholarship opportunities, summer internship opportunities, a weekly bible verse, a weekly trivia question, and music player so that you can listen to your favorite contemporary Christian music while you browse.  Please keep checking in for these and other fun additions to the Youth Alive page

Reflections Youth:
Carpenters in December, Pirates in January?!

Hammering, laughing and learning more about the reason for the Holy Christmas Season, 18 third- through fifth- graders joined their leaders for a fun-filled December gathering of Reflections Youth Group. The evening's theme, "Gimme Shelter," aptly described the group's craft project - building birdhouses for our feathered friends - as well as the lesson of how Mary and Joseph sought shelter in preparation for the birth of the their son, our Savior Jesus Christ.

Next up for Reflections will be a special outing to Scallywag Tag, where the students will learn more about teamwork while having some laser tag fun. Mark your calendars now for this exciting evening:  Friday, Jan. 14. For more information, contact Reflections Youth Leader, Kris Byrd at 752-1333 or at youth_director@fuse.net.

Youth Mission Fundraiser:
Reds Concessions

There's snow on the ground, and the forecast calls for concessionsmore.  It must be time to think about baseball, right? Actually it is!  The youth are signed up again this year for the Reds Concession fundraiser.  We are inviting the parents and leaders of the Reflections and CIA youth groups to participate this year.  It is a fun and simple way to help raise funds for these youth groups.  If you don't have a child/grandchild in any of the youth groups, but still want to volunteer - you are welcome too!  Classes for rehires (those who participated last year) and new hires will be happening very soon.  If you have questions or are interested in participating this summer, please contact Kris Byrd as soon as possible at 752-1333.

Awaken the City Mission

Awaken the City exists to awaken generations to serve, a city to hope, and the world to transformation through the grace of Jesus Christ.  Awaken the City equips, empowers and mobilizes people of all generations to serve in the urban core. Join us this summer for a week long mission experience in the City of Cincinnati.

We are about transforming lives and transforming the city.  We believe you have gifts to share. We believe the city needs you.  The church needs you.   Join us as we respond to God's call.  Now is the time to  awaken the City.  We have just one question, "are you awake?"

Our purpose is to equip, inspire and mobilize generations to seek transformation in the urban core by uniting the gifts of the church with the needs of the city. Together, we'll serve, worship, and grow closer to Christ.

Awaken the City is a ministry of Hyde Park Community UMC in Cincinnati, Ohio.  We serve because we see the city waking up to God's presence.

Awaken the City is about people.  It is about our city.  Awaken the City is about partnering with God and following the Spirit into the world.

We seek to unite the gifts of the body of Christ with the needs in the city.  We are in ministry because we see the possibilities for transformation.

We see the possibility of restoring, renewing and rebuilding the city, one life at a time. The purpose of Awaken the City is to equip, empower and mobilize people to serve in the city and across the world.

Join the adventure.  Respond to God's love.  Together with God we will Awaken the City.

United Methodist Conference Awarded $900,000 Grant from Lilly Endowment

WORTHINGTON, OH: The West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church has received a $900,000 Transition in Ministry (TiM) grant from the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc.  The grant will be used to expand and develop next generation clergy leaders in the West Ohio Conference.

The Endowment is a private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company.  The goal of the Endowment's TiM program is to strengthen pastoral leadership by supporting a variety of pilot projects that test new ways for helping new pastors move through the transition from student to pastor.

"This summer we submitted a proposal to Lilly Endowment with what we felt was a very compelling case for support," stated West Ohio Bishop Bruce R. Ough.  "We are very pleased to learn that the Endowment agreed and our entire request is being funded.  This is truly a landmark day for our Conference and we are most grateful."

Clergy leadership development has been a top priority of the conference under the guidance of Bishop Ough.  It is also the component of the conference-wide initiative, Strength for Today...Bright Hope for Tomorrow, which has resonated with the most vigor and response among constituents.

Rev. Wade Giffin, Conference Director of the Office of Ministry, will serve as grant project director.  "This exciting news allows us to immediately put in place many of the goals we have for clergy leadership," he said.  "I am very grateful to Lilly Endowment for this bountiful contribution to our efforts."

The West Ohio Conference will utilize $750,000 of the awarded funds to expand its existing Local Church Residency Program, $35,000 to fund transition from Associates to Residents in certain churches, and $115,000 to assist in funding its Transformational Leadership Academy.

The West Ohio Conference is the ministry office for The United Methodist Church in 58 counties of Ohio, supporting approximately 1,200 local United Methodist congregations, community centers, camps and retreat centers, as well as nearly 200,000 members.
