So Much More....

Ministry of Mt. Moriah is so more than some expect .

Ministry is about caring for and with our neighbors. Before the recession/down turn was headline news Angel Food was part of the ministry. Angel food serves all people, "If you eat you qualify" is one of Charlotte Bailey's (church secretary's) favorite sayings . Quality food at wholesale prices helps everyone stretch food dollars and stay healthy. Want breakfast with that or just breakfast? Then the monthly "Neighbors Being Neighborly" breakfast is for you.  When you arrive  you will receive a warm greeting, hot breakfast and fellowship with your neighbors yes, some are active at Mt. Moriah others are just like you all are Neighbors". You leave with the knowledge that there are neighbors that care about you, and you will be comfortable about getting involved too.

More than on site-going into the inner city to help Nast-Trinity UM Church or out into another community Felicity UM Church to provide hot meals and care to those our neighbors. Partnering is a way of life at Mt. Moriah and beneficial to so many. Our neighboring extends beyond the borders of Ohio into Ky, Tenn. and beyond into other nations. From hands on to relief in forms of supplies, food, water, medicines makes Mt. Moriah so much more than a place to go for an hour on Sunday.

As Christians we worship God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit and that worship is seen in our love, our service, and in our passionate services of worship.

Get involved and witness for yourself "Mt. Moriah is So Much More . . .

2010-11 1st QUARTERLY REPORT
  grid 1 Income Statement

Pledged and Nonpledged Giving

*  Projected includes pledged and projected non-pledged giving.

grid 2

2010-2011 1st Quarter Summary Comments:

This is the first report for fiscal year 2010-11 that began July 1, 2010.  Please note that generally, all giving is initially designated for the General Fund.  (Gifts received that are designated for a specific account such as RSG or Apportionments still go to those areas.)  Giving through the first quarter is 4.1% below plan and has declined each month of the fiscal year.  As noted in the final report for fiscal year 2009-2010, this would not appear to be the case when looking at the Income/Expense numbers for the quarter.  The difference is that the quarterly income includes monies given for the Raise the Roof campaign and two (2) grants Mt Moriah has been blessed to receive.  All of these funds are designated and, therefore, cannot be used for purposes other than those specified.

This budget shortfall directly affects Mt Moriah's ability to meet our financial needs.  Specifically, at the current level of giving, we will not be able to meet 100% of our Conference apportionment obligation without borrowing from our Dare to Dream fund.  As Ralph Malany told the congregation in early October, we anticipate an $11,000 shortage that can be addressed if each giving unit (family) can give an extra $1 per day for 90 days.  If our level of giving continues to decline, the shortage will be greater than $11,000.

In the last quarterly report, we stated that we will be continuing the Raise the Roof campaign.  As of this writing, the campaign has raised nearly $25,500 through your gracious giving.   This leaves a balance of $2,500 to pay the cost of reroofing the sanctuary; this is being borrowed at an attractive rate.  As soon as the loan is repaid, the campaign will end as it is obvious the congregation can not support the cost to complete the paving around the Education Building.

WELCOME

Mt. Moriah Welcomes Kris Byrd as Youth Ministries Director

If enthusiasm brings results, hold onto your hats! The already exciting youth program at
Mt.Moriah
will only get better!

Kris Byrd, an active youth leader here at
Mt.Moriah
, has been hired as the new Youth Ministries Director. She will devote twenty-hours a week as an employed staff member to focus on the needs and interests of youth. She will work closely with the other youth leaders "to help create a strong program that engages the kids within our church as well as to reach out to the kids in the community."

Kris grew up in a suburb of
Chicago. She attended Southern Illinois University and earned a degree in psychology. She worked fourteen years in banking, starting in her teens. That career in Illinois provided her the opportunity to meet her husband Sean. Sean was from this area, a graduate of Glen-EsteHigh School
as well as a three-degree graduate from UC. They returned here to be near his family. Kris and Sean are the parents of three boys, Sam, Alex and Jack.

Kris has been attending
Mt.Moriah since 2005. Being a very involved mother has led to her leadership in the education programs at Mt.Moriah. She has provided leadership for four years to a very dynamic VBS. She worked closely with other interested parents in the formation of the younger two youth programs, the Reflections and the CIA
's. Her role as the assistant Sunday School teacher with the high school class has led to her eagerness to be more involved. "I just love those kids!" she said.

Because you as a congregation had indicated a desire to continue building the youth opportunities here at
Mt.Moriah
, a grant of $10,000 from the West Ohio United Methodist Conference was applied for and received. This grant will provide the seed money for this new staff position.

Kris will be available in the education office most Tuesdays thru Fridays
. Kris says, "It is an honor for me to be here working with the other leaders to help further Christ's work with youth."

Education

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, believed Christians and especially Methodist Christians must be students, learners as is seen in the four tests for a Christian life:

Scripture---

Tradition ---

Experience---

Reason---

It is with purpose that Mt. Moriah offers studies inviting members, friends, and neighbors to learn and grow together.  Through opening scripture and one's heart and head, a dialogue is developed with God and neighbor.

Small group studies are available to expand and focus one's spiritual life.  Witness along with providing opportunities to live the Christian life of faith.

Current and upcoming studies being offered at Mt. Moriah:

Wednesday morning Women of Faith Study new topic will be "Experiencing Spiritual Intimacy"All women of the church are invited to join this group at 10:00a.m. in the parlor.

Tuesday evening study is "Breaking Free"

The Advent Study will be "Christmas Gifts That Won't Break" and will be offered THREE different times (Sunday afternoons at 3pm, Wednesday mornings at 10am, and Thursday evenings at 7pm).  Sign up today by calling the church office at 752-1333.

UMW

The Mt. Moriah United Methodist Women are reaching the end of our first year as Girlfriends Unlimited.  It has been a great year of interesting meetings.

Our Spring banquet featuring a fashion show of clothing purchased at our Rummage Sales was fun.  Over 100 guests were treated to an evening of good food and lots of laughs.

The common thread through each month is Love of God - Love for each other - Love of laughter.
Of course our rummage sales, World Thank offering, installation of officers, etc. that have been a part of our UMW for many years continue.

We invite you to the following events:

November 1 at 7pm will be "Clay Play".  All supplies will be provided so each lady can create a special, one of a kind piece of pottery.  It will be fired and available before the holidays.

December 4 - Breakfast with Santa sponsored by Susanna Circle.  Kids can eat breakfast, visit with Santa and shop for inexpensive gifts.  Buy tickets early!

Our December 6 meeting will be a beautiful time with small groups of girlfriends enjoying a TEA TIME.  Our board members will provide food, fellowship and china.

Meetings are the first Monday of the month.

Chocolate Cake Club offers hour's retreat plus tasty treats

chocolate cakeAnyone who has coped with the challenges of chronic pain or a cancer diagnosis understands the need to have a brief retreat once in a while . . . . somewhere you can leave your troubles at the door and laugh and talk among friends. Of course, a little dessert couldn't hurt either. That's the idea behind Mt. Moriah's Chocolate Cake Club.

The Chocolate Cake Club is a group of caring, concerned Christians who meet for an hour the first Sunday afternoon of each month to offer encouragement to one another while enjoying a tasty treat. (And, no, it's not always chocolate cake!)  Meetings are open to anyone who could use a little extra support and friendship to better handle some of life's most stressful trials.

So you might be asking, "why chocolate cake?"  As club founder Judy Barnes explains, "Just think about how you feel when you take a bite of really good chocolate cake, and there you go!"  In remission from Stage Four Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Judy formed the Club as an alternative to typical cancer support groups. "I just wanted a place where I could go to laugh and leave the cancer outside for a while," Judy says. "I knew there were others having the same experience, and this was my way of giving something back to the people of our church."

If you could use some encouragement among friends, please join us for our next meeting Sunday, Nov. 7, at 4:32 p.m. in the Parlor of the Education Building. Why 4:32? As it states in John 4:32: ""I have food to eat that you know nothing about."

If you want to learn more about what the Chocolate Cake Club is all about, please call Judy Barnes at 752-7659.

Celebrating a Thirty-Fifth Anniversary

ark logoOn a day in September, 1975 Lois Javins accepted a position as the four-year-old teacher at the Mt. Moriah United Methodist Day Care Center. On that September day she did not know she had found her place, her profession, her position for thirty-five years!

She was hired by the Rev. Millard Knowles and worked closely with his wife, Carolyn Knowles. In the early '80's she was asked to become Director of the child care center when the Knowles' ministry here ended.

Lois remained Director until 1992 when she asked to be replaced in order to spend more time with her grandchildren. She agreed to be the Assistant Director and has served in that capacity with three directors, Karen Smith, Doris Malany and now with Linda Harp.

For thirty-five years Lois Javins has helped administer this outreach of the church. As the child care administrator she has influenced children, assisted families, hired employees, met state requirements, served with board members, and reported to six pastors at
Mt.Moriah.

During the years she has helped maintain the quality program at the
Mt.Moriah center. Within her time the name was changed to The Mt. Moriah Ark of Learning Preschool and Child Care to emphasize the preschool and educational climate of the center. Through the last decade brain studies have recognized the importance of quality early childhood education. Lois has worked with the teaching staff of the center to maintain that quality and meet the individual needs of each child enrolled.

When asked about her many years at
Mt.Moriah, Lois said, "The rewards are many. I enjoy watching children grow and experiencing life as they see it. I enjoy sharing the lives of employees, becoming a part of the many families of our students, and working with the people of Mt.Moriah church."

Lois is a
UnionTownship resident. She and her husband, David, are the parents of two adult children and have two grandchildren. We congratulate Lois on her 35th anniversary and thank her for the contributions she has made and continues to make to the Mt.Moriah community.

THE 2010 CHARGE CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD HERE AT MT MORIAH UMC ON NOVEMBER 20, 2010

NEEDY COUNT ON HOLIDAY HELP FROM SEM FOOD PANTRY

The recession may be officially over, but down at the SEM Food Pantry, our clients are still having a tough time making ends meet and putting food on the table.  Every year during the holidays, we have many people who count on us to ease their way just a bit with a little extra help at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  We'll count our pennies, and if there are enough, we'll distribute upwards of 100 food baskets at Thanksgiving and 110 at Christmas.  What we do depends on you.

With our 100% volunteer staff and low, low overhead, we can tell you that 96 cents of every dollar contributed goes to the needy.  In addition to that, we partner with the Freestore/Foodbank and purchase food at low cost.  Your contributions will go a long way at the Pantry
