Christian by Decision

Ash Wednesday - Feb. 25. - marks the beginning of the 40-plus days of Lent, person at a place of choicethe Christian season of spiritual journey. On Ash Wednesday, Christians acknowledge their need of forgiveness. During an Ash Wednesday service of worship, the Christian prepares to embark on her/his personal spiritual journey. The destination is a better relationship with the Lord and people.
During this season Christians seek to grow spiritually using any of the following:
§         Giving up or refraining from something they enjoy,
§         Adding a meaningful activity,
§         Fasting,
§         Pursuing their life service/ministry/mission with greater purpose, or
§         Spending more time in scripture study, prayer, and worship.

Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter. The week between Palm Sunday and Easter is Holy Week. Many churches hold additional services of worship on Thursday (Holy/Maundy Thursday) and Good Friday. These special services focus on the grace, love and sacrifice of Jesus the Christ.

Holy/Maundy Thursday prompts Christians to remember:
1.        Jesus began the sacrament of Holy Communion on this night in the
             upper room.
2.        Jesus washed the feet of His disciples and gave us the example of
             servant leadership.
3.        Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples remembering God
saved the people of Israel from Egypt.
4.        Jesus gave Himself to be the sacrifice for our sins.
5.        Jesus prayed with great feeling this very night.
6.        Jesus' compassion and love for all people moved Him to heal the
servant's ear even while being led away.

Good Friday - good for humanity; pain-filled for Jesus. Christians reflect on the great love of Jesus for us as seen in the events of Good Friday. Jesus' great love kept Him on the cross when He could have stopped it. He paid the price for everyone's sins. Lent ends with the bright light of Easter and the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. The journey through Lent enhances the meaning of Easter, contrasting sin and grace, death and life. The light of Easter reveals the empty tomb, the resurrected Christ Jesus.

NOTE:
Sundays are not counted as part of the 40 days of Lent. Sundays are "little Easters". Christians are the people of the resurrection. Even throughout Lent, Christians remember and celebrate the saving grace of God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - on Sundays, the Lord's Day.

John Wesley the founder of Methodism encouraged Methodists to greet each other with "How goes it with your soul?" That is the question we should hear every day as we arise and as we retire for the day. Lent provides forty days for intentional spiritual growth. Come see what a difference it makes when, by design, you use the season of Lent to grow spiritually. Listen to or read the scriptures of the "New Testament" 30 minutes a day. Join a Bible study or Sunday school class. Take part in a ministry, mission or service project through Mt.Moriah.

"How goes it with your soul?" is a good question to ask at the beginning of Lent and then again on Easter. You will be pleased with your answer when you use Lent as a season of spiritual growth.

Lenten Donation for JAMfood bag offering logo

The people of Mt. Moriah Church are in a JAM...
...and we are happy about it!

In 2008 we joined with many other United Methodists to support the Jackson Area Ministries located in Jackson, Ohio, about 120 miles east of Withamsville.

This is a United Methodist mission project that provides food, clothing, home repairs, and spiritual support to those in need in the Appalachian area.

The Green Thumb Garden Project is one program of JAM.  Seeds and young plants were distributed to 2928 growers in 18 counties in the spring of 2008.  An adequate storage facility with a small office is currently being built to help reach more people.   Our funds helped make these projects possible.  This year the need is even greater.    We again want to help.

Can banks will be available the first of March for your Lenten offering.  We hope each family will have at least one bank placed in a prominent place in your home.  Youth and older children may want to take their own bank.  Banks will also be placed in the narthex for your donations.

As you meditate on the meaning of Easter, help us reach out in love to help meet the needs of others.
SUNDAY SCHOOL SCOOPmt moriah sanctuary in the snow
We just love it when our students invite their friends to join them at Sunday School.  We've seen some new faces in all of our classrooms this year and we're delighted to be growing!

We haven't let a "leaky" roof rain on our parade as we truly realized that it's not the building that makes our Sunday School so enjoyable, but it's the dedication and passion of our wonderful teachers who bring the love of God to their classroom no matter where it's located.  A special thanks to Rebecca Brewster, Scott Barrett and the Junior Class for their cheerful willingness to relocate their classroom to the Fellowship Hall until our roof is fully repaired and also to Michael Kummer and his Senior High group for accommodating the bright, bouncy, and a tad noisy Juniors near their classroom in the Parlor.

March signifies the beginning of a new quarter of curriculum for our students.  Has it really been two quarters of Rock Solid?  This quarter, our students will be walking with Jesus as he encounters Zacchaeus, Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, Death on the Cross, The Resurrection, the Emmaus Road, the Great Commission, and the first Christians.  It sounds overwhelming, but with their artistic and creative talents, our teachers will bring these lessons into the hearts of their students in a remarkable and fun-filled way.  We always invite our Mt. Moriah Family to visit one of our classrooms on Sunday and see what our students are learning and more importantly, experience all the love and joy that fills each classroom every week.  We are indeed blessed!

Also in March, we plan to kick-off our next mission experience which will benefit the Inter Parish Ministry in Newtown as we learn how we can Uphold our Neighbors with Hands of Grace.  You'll be hearing more from our youth as they invite you to participate with them in this positive program that can change people's lives in major ways.

Kris Byrd continues to update the Sunday School Bulletin Board located right next to the Nursery in the Sanctuary Building, so take a moment to see what the future leaders of Mt. Moriah are learning and experiencing.

We're all looking forward to God's rebirth of Spring!

Thank you for the cards, calls and expressions of sympathy regarding the recent death of my mother, Annie Louis Whitt. Our family appreciated the contacts with her from the Mt.MoriahChurch family during the years she lived at the nursing home. Her funeral service was held January 17 in her home church in North Carolina.
